hey there...

i need to do some g-code programming directly out of maya to do some 3-axis cnc drilling (topological studies)

has anyone some hits what could be important that is mostly underestimated?

see http://www.glform.com/ for reference how examples might look.

i'll «mill» with some simple algorithms based on greyscale maps (marble, ...) to simulate handcrafted surface qualities.

Yea, good luck with that - if your model isn't in NURBS, I am going to venture tha tyou are going to have a tough time, since polys don't do true curves. Whatever CAM software you plan on using will hopefully import in a format that MAYA can export.

hehe, ...

yeah, i'll program the machine code directly...

i'm still pretty optimistic... :)

if You try this here:

with any image...

be sure to:
[- use maya... :) ]
- use z-up
- use millimeters as units
- enlarge the animation range to (xResolution * yResolution)
- check out the animation of the drill !
- import any image to the node "file1" (best map it to the color channel of the lambert material)

this still simple script creates the drill path based on the greyscale values of the mapped image. the paths will surely become more complex !
