View Full Version : Distance-Based Reflection Bluring?

I'd like to know how to set up reflection bluring in layout so that the reflection is more clear if the subject is closer to the reflective surface, and the reflection gets more blurry as the subject goes farther away from the reflective surface? I found the reflection bluring option in the environment tab, but I don't see any distance or falloff options for it.

Thanks,
Dustin

Probably the other guys know better, but I don't think you can do it in LW directly.

...off the top of my flatish head. :)...I would try blurring the reflection buffer pass in comp....or if it's an animation- using DOF passes on the reflection buffer to add the blur in comp.

It should always be lesser reflection blur close to a surface than if an object is far away. With LW 9 and above you can of course have more influence on how you want it to appear, thanks to nodes. Here's an example.

hehe..showing my age...thanks ztreem....another reason to upgrade sooooon! :)

I would recomend you to upgrade to 9 as you get all the 9.x releases for free and 9.2 is a huge step forward compared to 9.0, the new AA system, photoreal motionblur, photoreal dof, faster rendering with GI, faster OpenGL in modeler and more... 9.2 is by far the best version of LW ever and it only is going to get better in the future. :)

Without using nodes is also possible methinks (though the nodes solution looks the better one) If we blur reflections NOT with the Reflection blurring option but with microbumping, we can adjust the influence of the bump with a gradient later on.
As I said, better with nodes.

You could also use the 'shader tree' plug-in (I think it's called that, don't remeber). It makes it possible to use textures for reflection blur, if you use an older version of LW than 9. The micro bump solution is also a nice one and it renders a lot faster.
Added just for fun ; LW 9.2 also renders blurred reflection a lot faster then previous versions.
