Hi all

Just a few questions regarding the tracking tools within AFX and their uses and limitations.

I have some DV footage of a high-rise building "about 12 floors high" that I have shot.
The footage will later be comped over implementing a fire on the 8th floor, this all needs to be tracked and renderd within AFX and 3ds max for Smoke/debris, different passes etc.

Usually I work off a still image/clean plate, which is exported to Max and tracked, although without any real measurements it can be hit and miss.

But this time I would like to use some DV footage as explained. I’ve tried to use some of the tracking tools within AFX, but am finding it very difficult maybe I need some 3d tracking software like Pf,Boujou Bullet or SynthEyes etc.

The footage is meant to give the impression of a hand held feel, and I'm moving around the building slowly, panning up and down the building.

If you guys could just clear my mind, as the tracking tools with AFX may or may not be suitable for such a task.

Thanks in adv

Not possible in AE. As said, you need a 3d tracking software.

Aye, you'll have to do what Scrimski says.

My advice is to download something like the Syntheyes demo (http://www.ssontech.com/regis.htm), press the magic "full auto" button, and see how well it solves the track. The demo won't allow you to export the data to a third-party application, but it will give you an impression of what you have to do to track the shot.

Good luck,
- Jonas

Thanks a lot scrimski, Jonas

I thought as much, but needed to be 100% certain. As it means spending more money, or the studios. I have played with the tracking tools within AFX and had some ok results but only on very static shots or where the camera has been locked off.

Could I ask where you guys/gals have used the tracking functions within AFX for projects?

Thank in adv.

Mainly for stabilizing footage or attaching matte layers.

you could try the voodoo tracker

Could I ask where you guys/gals have used the tracking functions within AFX for projects?Rarely, and only limited to 2D tracks. For instance, a tripod shot. Or a sky replacement.

I use tracking in After Effects for tons and tons of things, including:

-tracking in still patches to cover things I want to remove from footage
-stabilizing
-tracking in CG things, be it something sitting on a table or an entire matte painting background
-tracking matte layers, both regular 2D and along with scale & rotation, to make rotoing easier and faster
-stabilizing and retracking is neccessary for any splitscreening fx
-corner pinning in screen replacements, billboards, signage, or anything flat
-in the past 6 months or so I've been using tracking to apply to individual mask points

literally, almost every single visual effects shot I've ever done has had something in it tracked for some reason or another.

I made a few video tutorials for friends at SimplyCG.
Maybe some of them will help demonstrate how I use tracking daily.
