View Full Version : replace white seemless with black seemless
nbtsf 05-02-2007, 02:16 AM Hi,
I want to replace a product studio shot's seemless background color from white to black. The products are on the seemless, so they cast VERY soft shadows (superlight grey).
I want to keep these shadows and make the backgound a belivable paperBLACK seemless.
I have tried endless layer effects, replacement color, selective, etc., but I keep losing the shadows and it look fake.
Is there a way to do this?
Thanks
Norbert

Hi nbtsf,
I don't know what the image looks like, but I would try going into Lab space, create the black bkg and multiply the white over, and put the products on top in normal mode.
The blending modes work a little differently in Lab, because of its stucture.

If you have your objects already cut out - and I am assuming that you are working in cmyk, then use the black channel. Here's what I mean.
Turn off the objects or select them and place them on separate layers
Using your objects as selections (ctrl-click), duplicate the background and fill in the object areas with white.
Now go to your channels panel -
Duplicate the black channel, invert it
You may have to go over the result with a paintbrush or eraser to elimate the line/halo around the object area that sometimes results from this method.
Ctrl-click the inverted channel - you now have a selection of JUST THE SHADOWS
Go backto your layers panel
Create a new layer and fill with the desired color
Now you can put just about any color behind those objects that you want. Just create a new layer on top of the background and fill.
* If you are working in RGB - usually the green or red channel gives a good result for creating the inverted channel....
