View Full Version : Berserk: Hand Held Style
Cooper 05-01-2007, 04:01 PM Hey guys, been awhile since I posted something here. I decided to make Guts from Berserk, If you don't know what it is its a comic by Kentaro Miura. Anyway I'm starting with the Dragon Slayer his sword, its 78 Polys and the texture is 64x64.

I'll try to get updates to youguys when i can, I'm just super busy I just felt i had to post this.
Up next will be Guts in his Berserker armor, The poly range I'm going to shoot for will be around 500 polys with a 128x128. And after all that I have a coworker that wants to animate him!
Thanks Guys

Heres an upclose shot of the body and helmet, right now hes at about 193 polys, I plan on him being around 450 to 500, with out LOD's Allowing him to be a main character in a DS game if there was one. His neck texture is messed up so the pic below is a zoomed out shot.

Really nice texture job so far, and I'm loving the unwrap (looks like you've got some neat tricks in there). I'm wondering how well the textures would read on a DS screen, however, as they might get a tad noisy when scrunched down, especially when animated. I'm not too familiar with Berserk, but the dude's hand seems a tad small (not sure if that's accurate to the original design).

Huumm, never see Guts wearing an armor like this, but perhaps I missed something. I find it just a bit to much monochromatic. The back face of the arms could be more different than the metal plate. More 'leather'. Nice work. I love DS/PSP works, that change of Zbrush/normal map things. Waiting next update.

LoTekK, Thanks for the reply I've seen your work nice job, And yeah he would be VERY noisy on the DS, I would have to pull out the highlights and soften the texture for him to read well on the DS :( And thanks for the Hand crit, I'm gonna go look at that right now.
Takkik, This is Guts Berserker armor he is giving. If you want me to post what im painting from I will. I'm still working on the under side of the arm.
Thanks guys:)

That's looking pretty damn cool. I'm really intrigued by how you did the eye, do you have the texture mirrored or...? Could you post a wire as well? As for crits, there are two things that bug me and they are the face and hands as Lotekk mentioned. The face/head looks a bit lizard like but I can't remember how it looks in the manga, it's been a while since I read it. If you could post the ref I'd really appreciate it. And the hands do look a tad small like Lotekk said. Other than that, really nice work and I look forward to updates!

I'm falling more and more in love with low poly work sense I started working on next-gen games. :o) I think handhelds is where its at man.

any plans on making the hands into fists instead of that flat/weak looking stuff?
I'm not sure if the polycount matches up with the texture resolution..but I guess it does, keep going! :D

Hey guys, Heres an update of the character, I need to repaint the cape I guess, right now hes at 690 polys with the dragon slayer it puts him at 720. Much higher then i wanted him to be, I'll go in later and clean it up. There is no Rig he is a segmented character.
*Edit Sorry the Cape is rigged.

Nice work. :)
The only thing distracting me now is that the pixel density difference between the cape and the rest of the body is to great imo.
nice work!
If its for ds it could use a little less contrast i presume, to avoid flicker from the lack of texture filtering. And give the cape some better alpha, the ds can do a lot better then 1 bit magic pink stuff.
For the modelling, i think you could remove the loops in the middle of the lower arm and lower leg, and there seems to be a rather high poly density in the head. Also the segments in his body would be unnoticeable on the ds, so those could be removed.
And if your desperate to remove more polies, you could remove the middle line over his body, but then you would need some more texturespace for that area.

Was that the end of the project?
