Okay, I decided to check out some free rigs that are mentioned here at CG Society in the one forum, and I've found it rather useful in actually getting around to the animation, beyond all that modelling and rigging (which I can learn on the side without damaging the quality of my animation).
Here is what I've been able to put together with my first try at some proper animation in 3D that was not a tutorial or a walk cycle:

Before anyone crits it, I would like to say I think the ending is too fast and the movement of the 'head' needs to be slowed down a little in the curve editor. Unless, of course, someone disagrees and think it works just fine...this is why I'm posting here, to get crits (and hopefully more than one...I usually don't fare well for actually getting crits). I do invite constructive criticism, though, and hope I can get a few posts on it. Thank you in advance.
I have been doing 2D animation, but only to improve my character animation (I had a habit of thinking in terms of walk cycles for character, rather than actions such as how someone might drink their coffee or tea, how they might wait for someone, how they might struggle to pick up heavy weights, etc). I decided to start with 3D to loosen up, because 2D is...rather mechanical for me...

Those three are previous animations. I might have a slightly later version of the second, with more lead and follow action on the hands, but it isn't uploaded to YouTube (and uploading seems to be an issue at times...the waiting animation, the third one, took six whole attempts without the uploader getting stuck). Any crits on those are welcome too. You might see my development from being mechanical to being more loose with my character animation...if there is any.
