View Full Version : Warehouse Environment
westmeadow 04-29-2007, 06:24 PM Hey, another learning project for me. This time another environment after finishing my pirate character (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=39&t=419184) (<-- shameless plug).
This time I'm looking at a FPS kind of level, set in a warehouse. Any thoughts?

Also, any ideas of how to walk around the set. Any cheap* and easy** solutions to just jumping in there and getting an idea of how it would look real time? I have tried animating a camera using the walkthrough camera function and a script in max. You can see the result on my demo reel i posted on youtube here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2utxaBMf0O0). But i was wondering if there was an engine or an editor out there suited.
(note: that demo reel got me into Uni recently. woo  )

Looking good so far. I like the way the lighting's looking as well. Keep on going.

Love the lighting. The walls are a bit bare, though, but the circuit boxes on the wall are a good start to breaking that up -- put more stuff like that.
Also, maybe make the walls and floors dirtier, add some warning/directional signs; some nice general clutter will make it feel more "lived-in". But it's a terriffic start!

hey nice reel- I like the animations and design you did for that pirate chracter as for the environment it's going great in my opinion.
Game engine- I tried the Unreal Engine 2 for Unreal tournament 2003-2004 -it's really easy to use- you might want to try that. The Source Engine for Half life 2 is also nice- it has most of the next gen stuff HDRI- Normal maps- hmm I think it can do real time refraction? the pipeline is quite difficult to use- but once you get the hang of it you got one nice looking next gen environment.

Hey, thanks for the crits and comments guys. not had a chance to look at this since, but i have a day off tomorow, so the camera is coming out for dirt and debris reference shots.

Neither of those are really stand alone are they? I have Half Life 2, tried to reinstall it today but it didn't want to work, i'll try again soon. I want something i can basically import my geometry and maps into, then just have a walk around. hhmmmm

I know half life is a pain in the ass to get your own models in, i dont know about unreal but i suggest you take a look at far cry its very easy to import models into that.

Standalone UE2, free for non commercial use. Its kinda the equivalent of Gmax and Maya PLE.
Importing a model in UE takes just a few clicks and is real easy. The engine does get a little old though, its vertex lit based and your models might have trouble with that. Then again, HL2 is just as bad if not worse with handling mesh lighting..
If you google Roboblitz you can get hold of the UE3 editor for like 15 dollar and that one supports all the new stuff like real time light and normal mapping.

I don't mean to be a spoilsport, but if you're using Unreal or Halflife 2 or whatever engine, won't it only work if the person you're sending it to has that game installed on their computer? If it's for your own use, or you're sending it to a friend or something, then go ahead, use whatever. But if you're sending it a part of a demo reel to get a job, you should probably stick with just a camera fly-through and render it as a .avi or .mov, cause 99.9% of people will have media player of quicktime on their computer.
Just something to consider.

yeah true, but if he imports into an engine it will show that he can work with games industry software and can work through the technical problems that come with importing work into an engine. and to show potential employers he can achieve this he can use fraps to record ingame footage of his creations.

Very true, maybe import it into a game engine and use a video capture program? I used one I think it was called "fraps" or something like that.

Hey guys
Thanks for the posts and suggestions. Really, that's why i wanted to do it really. Just for my own knowledge and to get a feel of how it's done. An image capture of me walking through it would be a great addition to my reel, but i'm more excited about sending it to one of my other gamer mates. He's another avid Half life 2 player, that's why i was so eager to get that to work, ah well
More updates to come
