HI,

I am using Sub-surface Scattering (SSS) on the legs in the pictures. However if you notice on picture #1 there is distinct graininess to the leg. I am not using final gather. I have my Mental Ray setting at production quality and I am rendering out targas. At first the problem was that Maya could not write to the light map file because it couldn’t create it, oddly enough when the Maya could NOT create the file the leg is smooth with no grain but no SSS as seen in #2. Picture #1 is with Maya BEING ABLE to find and write to the light map however it is grainy. Any ideas on how to keep SSS and not get graininess?

There is a setting in the mental ray SSS shader for lightmap samples. The lower the samples, the more grainy the render will be... Raise the number of samples until you get your desired result.
