CAFÉ 003
"Antianeirai"

Amazoi (referred to in the modern day simply as Amazons) were the most feared race of antianeirai - literally, “Those who go to war like men,” according to Homer’s great work, The Iliad.

Amazoi, meaning “Breast less,” refers to the belief that Amazoi children, (all female,) had their right breasts removed to aid with the drawing of a bow - their main weapon in times of conflict...

Design your own female fighting warrior. She can come from a historical context, like the amazoi, from contemporary society, or even from a future/alternative time. You can make her beautiful but deadly, athletic, stocky, masculine or anything else you imagine a female warrior to be. Ideally, she will have modified herself in some way, like the amazoi did, to aid her when in combat.

CHARACTER-A-FORTNIGHT EVENT (CAFÉ)

Manifesto: The anatomy forum CAFÉ - a place to meet, share your concepts, ideas and work for the set brief, and then discuss them with like minded individuals (Bring your own coffee though...)

The purpose of this ongoing workshop series is to develop original character artwork in both 2D and 3D. A theme or brief will be given at the inception point of the workshop, and the project will be executed by the participants during a 2 week period. To have your own idea from the set brief, develop it in 2 dimensions and then execute it in 3 dimensions is very challenging, (especially within the time period,) and helps the artist to understand form “in the round.”

If you are thinking of taking your ideas into 3 dimensions, please decide on a suitable polygon budget (for games/TV/film or as much as your computer can handle!) If you are unsure, please enquire on the workshop and others will try and help. The workshop is application independent, and so anyone can try it. For those of you who would like to try 3d but do not have a package, blender (http://www.blender3d.org/ (http://www.blender3d.org/cms/Home.2.0.html) ) is a very high standard open source 3d application that is free to download and use. However, this will take time to learn.

Duration of projects: 2 Weeks.

Breakdown: (guidelines only – depends on the complexity of the idea and model.)

Concept development and realization - 1 week.*

Model development and texture art - 1 week.*

* You can split up your time however you wish - to reflect the area that you want to work in the most, for example.

The above guidelines are intensive and will require a lot of work. Please look at the amount of time you have available for each project before trying to take on too much. Quality artwork and developing your creative problem solving skills are key here, along with learning how others handled the same brief in conceptual and technical terms.

DELIVERABLES:

These are guidelines only. You can do all the sections or just choose the areas you feel most comfortable with. If you wish to use another persons concept art for a model, then please seek permission to do so from the user. If you just want to create the concept art and don’t mind others using your art work for a fully realized character, please state so in your post. If you are having trouble with an area, please shout up and others will try to help out as best they can.

WIP is encouraged, and please help others by providing your thoughts on their solutions in a positive manner. Discouragement of others will not help anyone as we are all here to get better, and people bring different skills to the table.

1. Concept art >>>

Ideas
Final presentation art (full body character pose, head and image plane orthographics.)
2. Model >>> (high poly cinematic or lower poly real time games character)

Base model (untextured)
Final model (with textures)
Learning outcomes:

How to develop ideas and a final character from a written brief.
Creative problem solving.
How to demonstrate your ideas to others.
Taking 2d artwork in to 3d artwork.
Texture art.
Visual communication skills.
RULES FOR THE WORKSHOP:

1. Work created here MUST be ORIGINAL TO THE CREATOR and for the purpose of serious study of character art and design. Those who post silly or off topic work will have their posts deleted immediately and will no longer be allowed to post on this thread. Rebecca Kimmel reserves the right to determine which pieces are considered to be in poor taste and / or disrespectful in the workshop.

2. This Workshop will run in 2 WEEK slots.

3. There is NO LIMIT to the NUMBER of posts an artist may make. However, we ask that you post only work which you feel best represents your ideas and important design points you feel others should know about during your character development, even if it is considered unfinished.

4. Artists who post comments and critiques of other artists' work on this thread must be RESPECTFUL, POLITE, and offer CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. Flaming will be NOT be tolerated, and constitutes dismissal from this and other threads.

5. Mike/default.rol and Rebecca Kimmel will be offering the occasional comments / critique ~ however, the main focus of the Workshop should be on Group Critique and interaction.

6. ANY MEDIUM or STYLE may be used: Traditional or Digital Drawing or Painting, Sculpture, or 3D Model / Render for the initial stages. Development beyond the initial character idea (stage 2) should be done in a 3D application of your choice.

7. Please limit the SIZE of your POSTS to 800 pixels WIDTH x Appropriate pixel LENGTH. No huge posts, please! (you are welcome to offer remote links to high resolution versions of your art work along side images that are of an appropriate size, if you so wish.)

8. Have fun, enjoy, and create great art!

For those of you slightly confused by the terminology, a fortnight is 14 nights in duration. Here is a definition of it from Wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fortnight

A fortnight is a unit of time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time) equal to two weeks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Week): that is 14 days (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1_E6_s), or literally 14 nights. The term is common in the British Isles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Isles) and many Commonwealth countries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_of_Nations), but rarely used in the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States). It derives from the Old English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_English_language) feowertiene niht, meaning "fourteen nights".

I'd very much like to try this. I can't model though, but since it's not necessary ... And I don't mind if somebody else would like to use it for a model for this event. I'd already be glad if somebody would deem it interesting / good enough.

I started modeling tonight - I've got an idea in my mind what I want so I went straight in >>>

Still got to really sort it out, but I posted it to prove that I *really* am participating this time. LOL. :scream: I've put in about 6 hours or so tonight and built it from scratch - most of the work, after the block in, is on the nose so far.

@ jojo1975 >>> Welcome, and we look forward to your participation. :)

@ Asatira >>> Welcome, it should definately be fun... :D

@ RicoD >>> Welcome, and good luck with your idea. We look forward to seeing it posted up here soon. :)

@ Blessing >>> good to see you on this humble thread, and if you do manage to find time to participate then we'd all love to have you here. Thanks for the vote of support anyway...

Hiya!
I guess im gonna join this one.
Ill just do concept art, since my 3d really sucks.

so ... this lady is a spec-op, equipped with modified genes and fortified muscle fibers. She's a character from the small world within my head. Coincidentally I haven't drawn any designs for her yet, so this is the perfect opportunity for me.
I got lazy on the front view, so its a little bit rougher than the back view. The lower body comes later.

Im doing my very best to stay in this one and heres about a half hour sketch inspired by the Pirates concept art rebecca posted up.

It is a water based alien- but as to what she does etc, I'm still forumulating... thanks guys Ill hang in with this one!

Hey all,

@ shapemaster >>> nice start you have there - she reminds me of Major Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell. I look forward to seeing your idea develop. :)

@ IronhideNT >>> Great start you have there, she looks very alien and water based - so you've succeeded in capturing those elements of the design in my opinion. Will she remain ephemeral in nature, like water itself, or will she be a physical character? Good start anyway. :)

@ Cnecktor >>> Hello and welcome! Please feel free to join in, as that's what this workshop series is for, (and it'd be pointless without member participation, after all. :scream: ) We look forward to seeing what you produce for the workshop.

Cheers all

*UPDATE*

Cleaned up the proportions, and UV mapped her head. I'm going to take her into ZBrush now and sculpt her up to how I imagine her.

Hmm, looks like everybody's still in the early stages.

I played around with a couple of ideas. I really didn't want to do Sci Fi at the moment, fearing I might get stuck at a cyborg or bionic woman kind of thing. I'm already doing that in another piece I'm working on, so that was out of the window. I then thought of something more now, but I quickly abandoned that idea. When I read the part about the cut off right breast I immedeately got images of breast cancer in my head, along with the concept how women fighting the disease are warriors in their own way. Not something I could easily do in 2 weeks I figure. Too emotionally charged to be dealt with lightly.

So, I guess I went for something more classical, but with a bit of a twist. I still wanted to do something with the whole idea of sacrifices that an amazon makes in trade for more battle prowess. I got this idea of a codependant relationship between a host and a parasite. The parasite feeds on the host who will die and age at an accelerated speed. But in return the host is granted all the power the parasite has to offer. However, the more power the parasite has to use, the more energy it needs and the more it'll consume the host, both physically and mentally.

The first is basically the first idea I got. The parasite ended looking like some weird fish thing. I'm not sure about the bow either. It's a bit too much of a cliche I think. I did decide on a strong and curved nose early on. I think it looks more powerful than yer basic cute nose or glamorous fashionmodel nose.
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s4/RicoD_PB/Amazon_parasite_sketch1.jpg

The second is just a variation. It was a slow day at work, so I did it while waiting for something to come up for me to do. Bleh, I don't like the Graphire tablet I used. Photoshop should have a boss key. ;)

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s4/RicoD_PB/Amazon_parasite_sketch2.jpg

Yet more variations. I tried to move away more from the fish thing. But ended up with this Nautilus like shapes. Why? Oh right. I think fish are creepy. Maybe I was swallowed by a white whale in a previous life. Nah, whales are mammals. Anyway, I gave her pieces of armor in this one. It makes the whole thing less 'hentai' ish, so maybe the girls from administration and the reception will stop looking at me with such disgust in their eyes. Just kidding, I think she's more recognisable as a warrior this way.

Any C&C so far?

MAY 2 2007

Made up a short poem to get me going on this FORTNIGHT 3 concept of the AMAZON WOMAN WARRIOR
From the most recent facts uncovered, they were ASIAN women somewhere up by TIBET.
Going to make a battle scene between women on horseback, and men on horseback.
Starting out with a facial expression that captures the feeling that I felt while writing the poem.
Was thinking along the lines of why woman would become warriors.
Entered my mind that it was probably in self defense of their children, after their men had been killed in a battle with a different tribe…NOTHING MORE FIERCE, THAN A MOTHER DEFENDING HER OFFSPRING….ORIGIN OF THE AMAZON QUEEN. And my concept

Echo’s of high pitched screams
Beauty not needed and unseen
Riding into battle like some wild hurricane wind
Phantoms from a dark nightmarish dream
Men of war hearts tremble, caving in with fear
The AMAZON QUEEN has arisen
It’s by the men of wars bloodshed that she is driven
Won’t be anymore men of war when the battle is over
Birth is now for living, now says the AMAZON QUEEN.

@default-rol: Looks like she's going to be strong looking! Do you decide on a look before you start or do you go for a basic shape and then push and pull until you have one that feels right to you?

@Rebeccak: That's a pretty good idea to quickly get something that works overall. Hmm, I ought to do that as well ... Why did you choose that one if I may ask. Personally, the ones that jump out to me are top row: 4th & 6th, 2nd row: 3rd, 3rd row: 1st and 5th row: 1st.

@SpiritDreamer: Yeah, I read an article on that too. I thought they were nomadic and traveled around? That's a pretty nice model you have there. I'm looking forward to that scene. But if the head already has this many polys, the entire scene would kill my machine! I don't think I ever met someone who actually starts from poetry. Does it speak more to you than for instance music?

@Diabolos: Looking forward to your model. She looks confident aand strong. The fingers on her right hand aren't really correct though, but you'll probably fix it in the model since you drew her left hand better. That line at her left wrist is just a tad too long I think.

Need ... sleep ...

I added a dab of color to my last sketch. Slow day at work again. I'm eventually going for a mix between all 3 of them though. And add some stuff like maybe shoes and perhaps knee protectors. And perhaps some darker colors for the leech. Perhaps a dark green ?

Rico D…THANKS….Really liking the look of your concept…very exotic, and also really nice technique…BEAUTIFUL JOB SO FAR

About the poetry, I just like to get the concept down in my own words, and that poetry seems to spark a vision every time I do it that way. Poetry is a visual language, that is made to create an image in the minds eye that is more than what is written in word.

As far as music goes, I always have it on in the background while working. Most of the time, it’s PINK FLOYD, or something classical, depending on what kind of image and mood I am trying to create.

GREAT JOB so far everyone, I’m really looking forward to seeing where they all lead to.

In the top one, I’m just blocking in my concept, and thinking about composition. Will make adjustments and refinements as I go along.

The bottom one is a battle concept that I started about a month ago. Thought I would post it here, so you can see where, and in what direction I am going in with this current concept.

I was also not happy with my inking (but was tired and wanted to goto bed) - the base pencils are much better, but pencils do not scan very well on my cheap equipment.........at least my scanned artwork does not look like other members who have scanned their stuff **EDIT** - this does not sound right, I meant to say that my scanned artwork does not look as good as other artwork that I have seen from fellow members who have hand drawn their stuff and scanned it in - just wanted to clarify that.....

@SpiritDreamer: Thanks for the compliment! I'm still very noobish with Photoshop though. But at least I'm not cowering in hiding anymore. ;) Your samples look very promising and dynamic!

@Diablos: Those are very tricky indeed. I usually struggle with them as well, as you can tell from my sketches. I usually have to redraw them a couple of times and sometimes even use 'bounding boxes' to get them right, especially if there's foreshortening. According to the movie Goya's Ghost, Fransisco Goya would charge extra for hands. So nothing to beat yourself up over. ;)

RicoD: I like your last colored sketch the best, although if I were you I'd move her jaw in closer to the nose line.

default-rol: Good start to a head! Try to make her lips bigger, and the upper lip area(between the nose adn the lip) smaller. It might also be easier if you model/sculpt her with her mouth closed.

Hey all,

some beautiful things turning up now.

@ questionmarks >>> I love the idea. The concept sounds really good. How are you planning on developing it?

@ RicoD >>> I had a really strong "look and feel" in mind for my character when I thought of the project - so I hunted up some reference from 3d.sk, and started right away. I'm loving your ideas, and I hope that you get time to push them further!

@ Rebeccak >>> beautiful thumbnails you have there, and not a dodgy cuticle in sight! LOL.

@ SpiritDreamer >>> WOAH, epic battle scene! Really cool idea too, I agree that maternal protection is a force to be reckoned with - just ask my MUM!

@ Diabolos >>> Good luck with getting something developed in 3D from that idea. I know it's hard when you've got other things to be doing too. Good luck.

@ Fl3wk >>> we've still got 8 days or so to go - pleanty of time for an idea to develop. ( think!) lol

@ Roja >>> Nice concept - I originally thought Xena - warrior princess too. lol. Thanks for the feedback, I altered her philtrum the next morning before seeing your comment, (though I'm still struggling with her upper lip.) I hope you get to model your idea.

Cheers all, I'll update with more of my work over the weekend when I get chance to do it!

Hello there, here's my idea for this challenge. A warrior woman of the sky; with telescopic eyesight and razor-sharp detachable tallons/ fingernails that can be thrown with a flick of the wrist to shread her foe...

http://www.andrewowen.co.uk/cg_threads/cgsoc_chara-fortnight/03_angel_warrior.jpg

Hopefully i'll get a bit more time to work this one up in photoshop - I'm not too happy on the position of the rear wing, at the moment it suggests her body should be twisted a little more away from the viewer.

finally got the thing done.. here's my finished drawing:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v59/fflewddar/amazongirl2.jpg

Next I'm going to color it in...I don't think I'm going to do a model for this one. Just don't have much time, plus I mainly wanted to focus on the drawing/painting side of it, to get practice with that. But I'll see, maybe I'll still model something :p

Igor Sandman: that's a cool concept. It'd probably look better if you made the lines darker on it.

Cnecktor: That's coming along nice. It looks like her entire torso area is too small for her head & legs though.

SpiritDreamer: I just noticed something about the composition I thought I'd give my 2cents on. My eye starts on the 2 top guys, then drops and stays down on the bottom guy..you may want to extend the canvas a bit in that lower corner and add something to bring the eye up and around again. It's looking neat though :)

AndyO: Haha, cool idea with the fingernails :D

Roja...LOL...Those two , GUYS that you just referred to are in big trouble if they have breast and nipples that are as evident as I have decribed them in that fist monotone drawing that you are referring to..:scream:
Maybe it's time for you to get some glasses..LOL...JUST KIDDING..:)
But seriously, you should see what your looking at, before you make comments and crits. Maybe it's just that you are too used to seeing knockout models with silicon boobs like Zena or whatever her name is, as amazons, running around in skimpy bikini outfits..LOL..The typical Hollywood brainwashed male delusion.LOL
I am going for a more realistic and mature version of a woman warrior in my painting...just as I stated in the poem that I wrote for this painting at the very start of it, posted a couple of pages back...BEAUTY NOT NEEDED AND UNSEEN.
I agree with you on that bottom right corner in my composition..has been bothering me from the start...I will put a spear tip coming from that corner, and aiming up toward the WOMAN rider on the left in the painting...That spear tip should lead the viewers eye to the beginning of the composition, completing the circle...HOPEFULLY..:)

On yours, I think a nice S curve in that figure would really add to it.. she is looking a little stiff /frozen at the moment
THANK YOU for the feedback,..always helpfull and needed...
Looking forward to seeing where you take yours next..:)

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend you. Yes I did notice their bodies(at least on the foremost one), and I guess I was mainly looking at their faces when I posted that-which do look very manly. Maybe soften them up a bit? Especially on the one that's fallen to the ground(or maybe that one is a man?).

HEY....Roja....I never get offended..lifes too short for that..:scream:
If you really want to know what's happening in that painting, you will just have to go back and read the poem that I wrote...that's what I am painting...:)

War doesn't creat soft, and beautiful women

It sure doesn't. I'm not as much into the whole "hollywood" stereotypes as you might think..yes I drew a pretty amazon girl, but I tend not to overexaggerate the forms & clothing, I do like to make things more realistic in that sense. But sometimes it's just fun to draw some ideals :)

And yeah my drawing might be a bit stiff..I do want to work on more dynamic poses, but first I just want to be able to draw a pose that I made up on my own. Then I'll get into more difficult stuff.

Hi...Roja..:) .... I really enjoy beauty and beautiful women ALOT myself :) ...I just felt like venturing into a different and deeper aspect of human nature for this concept...that's just me at the moment..:scream:
Hey, I was wondering, have you ever seen any of Burne Hogarths books..I think that you would really ENJOY and get alot out of his book DYNAMIC FIGURE DRAWING...All of his books are great, but that one is my favorite, and is the one that helped me the most in learning how to creat figures from my own imagination...I would be totally lost and frustrated in creating figures from my imagination, without having read and studied that book over the years...I still find myself going back to it whenever I run across a hard pose that i'm working on and can't quite figure out.
I had him years ago as a teacher in L.A....All I can say is, he was an amazing teacher, and put everything he knew and had learned over a long lifetime into those books of his...so if you haven't yet , by all means, do get his books...they will for sure make your journy more enjoyable, and a whole lot easier.
TAKE CARE, AND HAVE A GREAT DAY...THE WARM WEATHER IS FINALLY HERE..:bounce: :)

Yes I actually got that Burne Hogarth book about a month ago and have done a lot of studies already from the book! It is definetly helpful-in fact it helped me create that girl I just made here, because I did her all from my mind except I did look in the mirror for doing the hands and arms. But the more I draw from that book the more my brain learns how to depict the body in different poses...I'm almost finished with part 1 of the book, part2 looks really fun.
That's so cool that you actually had him as a teacher! And yes..finally warm weather, got to get off this computer and go outside! :)

@RicoD, @SpiritDreamer, @default-rol, @questionmarks and @Rebeccak: I'm absolutely in love with your sketches. I wish I could write a good comment on everyone's work, but I'm too tired and cold... I wish I could join, indeed! D*mn job!

Anyway, I'll be following all your works, because I'm a stalker. :p

Once again, congrats to all of you, guys and girls! :applause:

Hey all,

Really cool ideas and some really good stuff has come out of a difficult brief, you have done yourselves proud.

I'm currently in London away from my beloved computer and programs, so I've been unable to add to my start this time round. Another idea for the "to complete one rainy day" pile, as it were.... LOL.

Next worshop goes live tomorrow, and I'm sure that it will give everyone scope to flex their creative muscles.

Cheers all
MIKE :)

I'm still working on this one :p
Here's what I've got done so far:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v59/fflewddar/amazongirl3.jpg

I'm playing around with painter at the same time trying to discover a style of painting I like doing...I don't want to do something that takes too long, and this kinda does take too long :p Oh well..I'll keep experimenting with future projects after I finish this up.

Calling this one done!

My CONCEPT FOR THE FORTNIGHT CAFÉ 003 THEME AMAZON WARRIOR WOMEN
CREATED TOTALLY FROM MY IMAGINATION, NO REFERENCES USED.
Z BRUSH / PAINTER 9 COMBO
Took the theme, created a short poem for it, then created the painting from that poem.

Echo’s of high pitched screams
Beauty not needed and unseen
Riding into battle like some wild hurricane wind
Phantoms from a dark nightmarish dream
Men of war hearts tremble, caving in with fear
The AMAZON QUEEN has arisen
It’s by the men of wars bloodshed that she is driven
Won’t be anymore men of war when the battle is over
Birth is now for living, now says the AMAZON QUEEN.

Well done everybody! Questionmarks, that turned out better than I thought it would. Good job! Looks like spiritdreamer is the only one who managed to finsih it.

I thought I had one more day ... so mine's also unfinished. I'm aware of a lot of incorrect things and I even managed to forget to paint in some things like her panties so I painted them on top ... grr.

I think I'm going to sit the next one out and work some more on this one.

That's a nice statue model questionmarks, you should just paint in the leaves..no need to render them in 3d if that's the problem.
