View Full Version : Trouble Kid
windarr 04-27-2007, 05:02 PM This character was done (started a few weeks ago) to break my normal mold of character and figure out how to do a fairly realistic little kid around eight years old. So here are the side and front reference sketches and my current progress on him, looking at the polycount I've gotta scale down the resolution in his face though, but overall the body is working out pretty well. He's going to be a troublemaker, hence the title of the thread and will sport the obligatory slingshot and snears.

looks more like a deformed older man. The preportions are way off, and the face texture needs a lot of work. I would try to work off of photo reference as opposed to your drawing.

Hi Laughinbun, well the texture is certainly still rough and a work in progress so I understand your thoughts on that but the proportions are correct I did use reference for the sketch. So it'll come together more as I proceed on finishing the texture up.

it's a decent start but, uhm, how many 8 year olds do you know with a six-pack?

:D Yeah I'll probably soften it up a bit later, but I do recall one when I was a little kid, he seemed pretty fond of showing it off too from what I recall.

fair enough, i think the problem with the head isn't so much the size of it, but just that the face itself kinda looks like an old man instead of a little kid, i'd start by sommthing out the eyelids especially, and soften up everything else.

Yeah, you're absolutely right, I had already softened it up some, and knew it was still off, but figured I would come back to it after I got through the rest of the texturing. Got a few other things to take care of in the meanwhile though on some other projects, so let me know after I revisit the face if I've achieved childishness or not. :D Hope I can get back to this in the next couple days though.

He has old man nose. As we age, bones stop growing at/around adulthood, but cartilige continues to grow. That's why our elders have larger noses and ears, and children have tiny button noses.

So far it looks nothing at all like a kid. It looks like an angry, middle-aged dwarf. Despite your assurances to the contrary, I agree with LaughingBun that the proportions are off quite a bit. Particularly the facial proportions and the legs, which are too short (his legs are good for a toddler but not an 8-year-old). A child's face should be smaller compared to the size of his head than an adult. And his jaw and brow are way too heavy. Also, you shouldn't "soften" the definition in the body....you should erase it outright. Same goes for the face. Kids don't have defined musculature or age lines. Sure you can make an argument that you recall one kid with muscles....but thats like saying I'm going to model a black guy with pasty white skin just because of Michael Jackson. It won't ever read as black guy, just like your model here will never read as child if he has lines and creases.
But, again, I think the biggest improvement would be for you to just shrink the face.

Thanks for the feedback Gradius and Buzzy, I found it hard to read at first (as you can tell by the late date of the reply - though I also partially forgot about it later), but your notes are very relevant. Especially found the note on the facial growth from Gradius helpful. I would like to revisit this character still (as soon as I get some time), so hopefully I can put them to good use.

I'd also be careful not to give him "woman" hips. He's verging on that now.
Cheers!
