Hello all ! I don't know if I'm on the correct area, but here we go.

I use maya 7, I'm playing with Shave and hair cut. Well, I can't lie, I get trouble xD
I have mentalray as render motor, and it works pretty well. But definatly, shave and hair cut seem to be hard to set. I don't have some good shadow, the lighs don't make the hair correct. When I turn On the "use all lights" it's a lot weird. When I turn it off, it looks cool but no lighting impact on hair xD

Could you give some advice, esential points ?

Here my scene, and setting

Haven't made lots of experimentation with hair or fur rendering but...
from the little I tried... it has always made sense to use light linking...

Hair (and Fur) respond very quickly to back lighting...
the overexposed look u get when using all lights... is the non shadow casting spot lights passing through the head and illuminating the hair.

so.. it kinda makes sense that hair should have it's own set of dedicated lights
for example on any oject U might wanna use multiple spot lights to get a rim light while with hair u propably wanna use only ONE.

Does shave and a haircut work with raytraced shadows? have you tried depth maps?

I rendered all in one pass. we suggested to me to render the hair in another side. It still get some raytrace shadow there. But I can't understand why it's so weird ;(

i think i have run into similar problems. Try breaking the light link with fill lights and other secondary lights. It might work with just the key light illuminating the hair.
