View Full Version : Speeding up max viewports ?
BartW 03-12-2003, 01:55 PM Are there any guides or stuff on how to speed up the viewports ? My hardware is pretty cool, but with a 36,000 poly car in wireframe things are getting a bit sluggish. It seems I have done something wrong, but haven't been able to figure out the best settings in combination with GeForce 4 Ti4400 yet :(
Doesn't really seem to make much difference with my older cards to be honest.
Anyone have any advice/links on this ? Thanks!

Howdy !!
You ought to check out the above thread titled "Tips and Tricks", it has a couple tips on optimizing viewports.
Among others, closing the Material editor will somewhat speed up thing, specially in animation business, since Max keeps on updating MEdit with each frame.
Other than that, well there are a couple usefull display features, to keep your scene well organized, using layers, named selection sets, freeze and hide features, as well as "display as box" and suchs.
Indeed it would seem that something's wrong, you might want to check if you have the latest drivers installed ?

also check the hardware section of this forum, lots of good stuff there.
uhm a 36k poly car,,, dont expect it to run smooth =)
You might want to try go to polygon subobject mode, select the polygons you want to work with and "hide unselected".
Also you might want to give your ti44 a little softquadro upgrade.

Whoops, sorry for not checking that thread out first.....assumed it's only modeling tricks :D Thanks!

Also you could have your meshsmooth only be applied when rendering. I have an underpowered PC, when I am certain of the models integrity, I just adjust the meshsmooth options so the viewport displays unsmoothed mesh.

soft quadro is a hack to increase performance, its a hack of the quadro pro card drivers. search in the forum there is loads about it. from what i gather you get around 5% faster and 35% less stable, and im not sure if it works with geforce 4 cards. but then im no expert. find the other threads...
