View Full Version : Blenderizing Wings?

I have a fun dilema: I love blender's default hotkeys for the speed and efficiency with which I can model, but I like Wings' powerful modelling specific tools. I can't stand Wings' default key setup after using Blender for so long (I used to use wings all the time), so it would be nice if I had all the hotkeys set up like blender's.

Before I go the the trouble of setting them all manually, is there somewhere I can download a configuration file from someone that has already gone to the trouble of changing it? :)

Thanks for your time.

Could you please explain what is good about Blenders hotkey setup? The poly modeling tools to me appear to be almost non-existant. I look at the buttons in the poly modeling toolbar window and I only see extrude with a bunch of other weird tools I would never use like shear, fractal, etc. Can you briefly explain how poly modeling work flow would work, because Im so tired of hearing the common hype about how great Blenders workflow is once you get used to it, yet noone is able to explain whats good about it.

Hello arquebus.

Kindly check the link below for a gist of edge/mesh tools in blender.

Blender's workflow is touted for its hotkey setup. You don't even need to use the mouse for 90% of the functions (or at all really, but I prefer to move things around with it).

E extrudes, s scales, g transforms, and the axis for all of them can be adjusted with the middle mouse button, . aligns the camera to the selection, / hides all but the selected object (and undoes it). There's a lot more, but I'm still learning the keys, and iluvgfx's link is a better reference than I could provide here.

Here's a link to useful information about Wings hotkeys:

Never mind guys. I figured out what I was doing wrong in blender, so all the difficulties in modelling went away. :)

Thanks for the help, though. <3

arquebus,

words can't describe Blender, you'll have to experience it to see for yourself.

MKR,

good to hear you like Blender.

If you need help or have any troubles with Blender, there are chat rooms on IRC with the Blender users AS WELL AS SOME of the Blender developers. You'll need an IRC program such as trillian, everybuddy or mirc (for Window users) or kopete, gaim or xchat (for linux users).

Server is irc.freenode.net
Channels:

#blender
#blenderchat
#blendercoders
#blender

Good luck.

I was looking at Blender and Wings. I like the workspace for blender, but was disapointed that it didn't have a torus (I want to create jewelery with it) and I'm curious about texture mapping. Any advice here or is Wings the way to go for this project?

Sincerely

bonim.

For a torus, you can create it quite easily in Blender.

I don't want to piss these guys off, I got the feeling I am. Sorry guys.

Anyways, if you want to make a torus, just make a circle in front view and while stile in edit mode, move the circle away from its center of mass (the circle's own center) and use the Spin tool in the F9 menu. You need to be in top view first, before you spin.

Make sure you select all the vertices and remove doubles after you've spinned the torus by press W > 6 (W then 6) hotkeys. After spinning, a good habbit is to remove any doubles (overlapped vertices) so that you don't get any artifacts (unclean mesh), you can do so by press Ctrl + N with all the vertices selected.

To smooth the torus, select all the vertices and press W > Alt + 3. Then Press Ctrl + 2 to apply a level 2 subdivision surface to the torus to make it smoother.

Here's an example:

and... of course one can easily create a torus within wings3D ;)

Just right click anywhere in workspace, choose torus, or better yet, click the little box on the right of the word torus, and further define :D

Wings rocks, that's why it has a forum here at CGT ;)

Considering they're both free - why not use (the best bits of) both?

In the torus situation - just export a torus from wings and open same in Blender?

Also, in wings, it's relatively simple to create a solid of revolution (lathing) even tho there's no named tool (as such) - so, if you require a 'ring / torus' shaped object - but with a custom cross-section, rather than circular - then no problem.

Newest Version (make sure you have python installed) Add->Mesh->Torus
(There is now a python interface for adding user primitives to the add menu) and torus is included in the release as an example.

or you could always do this

Add->Surface->Nurbs Donut->Alt-C to convert to mesh

You guys are great!!! I really like both programs and can see the strength in either one. Thank you so much for the info. I'll probably use a combination of the two for my project. thank you again. all of you. :)
