For any Blender users here who don't frequent the BlenderArtists forum, this thread (http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=94351) discusses the long-anticipated subsurface scattering material which is being developed by brecht. There are builds at GraphicAll.org (http://www.graphicall.org/builds/index.php?PHPSESSID=07969a3c7ed99ef02300741056086776) (and in the thread itself) where it has been implemented.

Enjoy.

I've seen SSS faked in blender, via the node editor using composite techniques.
It'll be good to have an actual material that does the job.

Thanks for the find (as I don't "frequent":))

i think its conna be a node, not exactly a usual blender material, but well, thats in no way bad.. :)

It's no longer a node.

Pardon the hot-linking, but here is what it looks like in the newest patched version:

Sorry, Thoro.

By the way, the selector that says "Custom" is where you can choose pre-formatted SSS settings like Apple, Marble, Skin, etc., or create your own Custom mix.

Blender development continues to shimmy along nicely, the Suzanne monkey is indeed evolving.
Does anyone know how to install/use the blender cloth binaries (many thanks!!)

Can be found here

I couldn't tell you how to run that cloth patch but I'd suspect you should try the OS's binarys at the bottom of that page. Not tried them myself (could be dead for all I know).

There is now the ability to render Caustics internally as well now.

On Graphicall you can find various CVS builds along with some other patched versions of Blender:
http://www.graphicall.org/builds/index.php

You can read more about it's caustics ability here:

http://www.blendernation.com/2007/05/07/cvs-builds-available-with-caustics/

It does seem to be a fake method but nonetheless it's a good start.

Here is a good example what you can do with the current SSS in Blender. I really like this
Render!

It was made from Renderdemon from Blenderartists.org
