I have alot of questions and I'm sorry if I post to much, but basically I've only recently started viewing CGSociety, and so far have found the hard surface texture tutorial. Moving on basically I underestand 3ds Max (used it for a year.) Only problem is I've never dwelled any further on using materials, or any render but clay render, and no other light but a spotlight.
Basically I need a few wake up calls on the following things.
1) Can you bake normals in 3ds Max 8-9 now, I seem to have spotted something in render to texture, but I hardly understand anything in that menu. If so how would I go about this?:wise:
2) Can someone please go over the 'render to texture' window, all the commands in there have me googled  .
3) From the 'hard surface texture' thread I kinda picked up 'render to texture' was a easier way of making uv maps. If so how would I go about this in that menu, how does this method work, is it better than planer mapping and is there any other methods better than this that require roughly the same time to complete. :wise:
4) Linked to question 3 the 'hard surface texture' thread pointed out that mental ray was needed. I went to simple assign mental ray in the render but a ton of errors came up, can anyone enlighten me on this and give me a few tips here and there on using mental ray, and combining it with 'render to texture'. :wise:
5) Linked to question 3 and question 4 can anyway show me some neat materials, mostly some related specifically to mental ray or other cool jazzy materials that may be useful.
6) How can I run realtime normal maps, I know how to assign them onto the model via material menu, but they only appear in the render, I heard it's possible to have the normal maps run in the viewport. Anyone know anything about this?
7) Along with question 6 How can I get transparency maps to work. Which material or thingy would this be under.
8) Can anyone give me some good tips, theories of things I should think of before starting modeling, things to speed up modeling and things to make a model cleaner and look better easier. Or just genreal tips
THANKS ALOT IN ADVANCE. Also I put the questions in number order so any of you can just answer anyone seperately. Any help would be most grateful. :)
