Hi all,

I've been working as an artist at Streamline Studios for the last year and half(let me say, a really cool place), and I'm having the opportunity to work on exciting projects. One of the past projects was Gears of War and I can finally show some assets I textured for it.
I hope you guys like them.

Really sexy stuff. Is it possible to get any specs and wires to see how you made them? :)

Very nice props. Would it be possible to see textures and wires?

First let me say what a great game GoW is. Turned out excellent!

Props to your props....:D very nice. As Oink said wires or specs would be nice to see.

Good stuff. I really liked GoW, and i often found my self gazing at the textures and in game art. =) cheers

Those props are so nice looking that a feel a little pang every time I see them burst into a cloud of splinters when I'm hiding behind them. ;)

I have to say that I have gleefully enjoyed ripping your props apart with the chainsaw bayonet looking for COG tags :)

So did you just do the texture work? Or did you do the modeling as well? I would be interested to know other specs for these props... wireframes, poly counts, what maps were used, what the sizes are for the maps, and what your UV's and texture flats look like.

Thanks for posting these.... your work fits well into perhaps one of the best polished games I've played, so "props" to you!!

Thanks a lot guys for your comments :)
Unfortunately I can't show the flats for these models, but I can give you some specs.
The polycount goes from about 600 polys for the palette to 1800 on average for the others,I don't have the exact numbers because it was a while ago :) The textures were painted at 2048x2048 (diffuse, normal, specular) but of course they were scaled down for the final game content, some of them even to 512x512. For all the forniture there are also destroyed states and one damage texture used for these parts.

ThreedyModeler : I only textured those models.

Trots op je gast! :D

You did a very great job with these assets, they're in my inspiration folder now ;) By the way, can you give me a quick overview as how it was to texture these? I mean, how did you adapt and texture in GoW-style, they have a really cool style and I think you nailed that here... But maybe explain a bit how you textured these? Like, did you use photo references and then tweak that or did you handpaint them?

Awesome work! I just picked up the Art of Gears of War at lunch with the strategy guide and this is no less impressive.

Quick question. These were assets that were contracted out to Streamline Studios. Did you build these assets with max or maya? Could you also post some wires?

Great work!

Hehe good old GOW props :) Y'all did a good job of it, sucks that I was so close to working on it and then got placed on that other project :D

Good to see you finally get to post these things Fabio, I'll let you answer questions on specs and tools since I don't know how much we can say  (but you could have done some nicer presentation shots :P)

Quality work. Thanks for sharing these.

On small crit about the presentation. I think the way they are rendered has kinda killed the normal and sepcular maps (which is a pity). I think if you could tweak your render/light set up a bit, so that they are more visable, it might give your presentation that 'extra' kick.

Anyway, great work.... and as most have mentioned; it was a pleasure to destroy them in game

Stefander: first of thanks :) Texturing for GoW was a really nice learning experience, a lot of time spent studying the other textures in the game.
The textures are created in part from photo sourcing and in part hand painted. Of course you can't just copy and paste a photo and pretend to be done, but it gives you a nice base to work with and a lot of small details and color variations that help the final look. Two very important things are also a nice ambient occlusion map (usually putted on multiply and adjusted in opacity)and hedgework that really helps defining and separate the shapes, both in the diffuse and specular. The specular can really change the look of the object specially for metal so try to add different informations in the specular and not just make it darker and with more contrast.

misterboogie: all model were done in max.

urgaffel: hey Peter, good to see you here :) Next time I'll try to spend more time on the rendering :)

mindrot: you're right. Specially the specular is not showing perfectly. Next renders I'll pay more attention to it, thansk.

looks awesome, amazing work, i would love to see the texture maps, but understand if you cant show em:)

Thanks.

Most maps were 2048 to begin with. Apart from smaller items such as the trunk. I believe that was done at 1024.

YES!! When I was playing online on the Mansion level, I would always hide behind that red wood chest and wonder who textured it (no joke!) Thanks for posting these, awesome work!

Looking really nice. In our school we got a message from DICE. They wanted us to modell and texture more so we would understand it more...

So watching these images really inspire me to work hard. Textures does alot in games :)

Thanks a lot guys! Destroying that dresser was one of the things I was looking forward to to when we got the game in the office :) Texturing those props and their destroyed states was fun.
