View Full Version : Showing my face

This image was based on my own face from shots I took from a crappy web-cam, I've still got a bit to go before I'm satisfied with this model. This is my first post here, but this is my third model (tree, space fighter, now this). I'm using max5 and I plan on texturing this model and doing morph's for it, then creating a body along with it. It's taken me about 2 days total (one day on the head, another on the ear) plus a few hours here and there when I get the time to do small adjustments. I'd also like to know why I can't change my avatar, is there a minimum # of posts I need first?

It looks quite accuratly made, show us some more angles and stuff for a better crit :)

Yes there's a minimum post limit to getting an avatar, not sure if it's 30 or 50.

Almost nobody gets any replies to a new thread until it's had AT LEAST 100 views, and bumping it just to complain if nobody's posted is annoying-- don't panic, just be patient, or post updates.

Also, be sure to hunt around the forum, do some searches on head modeling and topology and stuff like that, you can get a LOT of questions answered quick that way.

As for the head-- looks like a great start, though the ear is much too small. Read up on proportions. Show us some other views, maybe the reference you're working with, and show a wireframe too!

Your features are well done, however your proportions are off.

I have taken the liberty of drawing over your render with several guidelines for the general proportions. The drawing is not 100% accurate (there are a few errors as to the exact positioning of the back of the head. However i hope this is usefull.

A major problem besides the scale of the ear is the height of the head versus its length fore and aft.

Additionally the ear is commonly placed with the lowest point at the base of the nose and the highest at eye level. Ears have a wide degree of variation so your ear is indeed possible, however it does look strange.
The nose appears at the idealic length (1/2 way down the lower 1/2), however the mouth is so low, the area (no idea what its called) appears exagerrated. The part of the lips should be place 1/3 of the way down the lower half of the lower half of the face.

Question: i am a bit fuzzy on the placement of the ear, i know it is just behind the termination of the jaw, however i dont remember the way to determine were the jaw ends.

Maybe thats how his head is ... or maybe not :) lets see your mug and texture that mother!

yeah, seriously. Not everyone's head has the same proportions. Those rules probably won't fit over about 90% of real people's heads.

It's "HIS FACE"!....what happen if the ear is small like that and the side view either?? However, nice model.>

Yeah. so like my apologies to those out there who are taking offense. and particularly to the author of this face.

That was a crit, based upon the "ideal" proportions of the human face. If you were going for a human face it should approximately follow those guideliness. There are variations but many of them are not actually from variations in the actual ratios of the proportions but more from an overall adjustment of them. These can be applied to any face out there and will be reasonably accurate.

If Corth is not making a photorealistic head, then obviously these do not apply. However if he was then he should at least be aware of his mistakes.

Simply saying it is great does not make it so and does not help him. For one of his first models it is very good. However i do believe he has made some proportional errors.

Perhaps some pics for comparison as well as a wireframe?

how can you possably say his mistakes without seeing the refrance he is workin off

to me your the wrong way round If Corth IS making a photorealistic head then it is HIS reference pictures he needs to follow extreamly closey
if he is after the "perfect" head then fair enough he should follow the "ideal" proportions you point out
like has been said 90% of real "photorealistic" people arn't the "ideal"shape

Thanks for the comments everyone, and don't worry no offence was taken by anything said here, and I'm sorry if I offended anyone with my bump.

Lukashi - I took more renders of angles!

Gnarly Cranium - again, sorry about the bump, I made the ears just a little bigger, pretty much just the lobe of the ear though

Goon - I was noticing that the mouth area was off, I've fixed that (hopefully) and I did raise the jaw a little. Thanks for that picture as well! (I do have a large head as well, alot of my friends hats don't fit me, lol)

This would also be the first model I'd be making my own textures for, but should I do morph targets before I texture? I've heard max5 sometimes has problems in the skinning.

here are the new pictures (http://Mephiston_1.tripod.com/3d).

from your real picture it seems that your head should be even shorter, you have a very nice head in how it is shaped, and its not extreamly long. I like your jaw (its much like mine, angular and such)

Many of the proportions do seem off-- you're going to need some better reference pictures of your head, I think.

One thing I do have to say, though-- that is a MIGHTY fine nose!

Yeah, the nose is good. I like it in general, though I don't know if it's you or not.;) Maybe the ear is a little on the small side...

yay! update!

I went and squished the heads height and width, leaving the length and ears alone. I added a skin shader to the model as well (I do plan on creating my own texture, though it will be my first and unwrapping so far has given me huge headaches:insane:)

You should work again on the ears.;) Reduce it in nb of polygons and attach more of bottom of the ear to the head.

My ear doesn't look like your suggesting though, Nicool (if it does in my picture, it's just the shadow, trust me :D)

I also just found out I was going about the unwrapping wrong (shame on me:shame: ) so now I'm going to go back and do just a lil more work on the model before I unwrap it and start on the skin:xtreme:.

hehe, I  these little :) guys:beer:.

Off I go to create! :arteest:

Well, I thought I'd post again to show I'm not dead. I've been playing with textures and I'm working on making the final texture right now, but this is just a filler for the time being. I have plans of making the upper lip thinner still, and one day I'll get to the eyes :) . Let me know how you think it's coming, thanks for all the comments!

Wow, it's been a long time since I was able to get back to the comp I was using 3dSmax on, sorry for not updating for a while.

However, in my absence I bought some webspace, so at least one good thing has come of it. Here is the latest pic with a 'closer to finished' texture.

I worked on the eyes and got them all textured and such, but now I'm not liking the eye sockets, they kinda look off somehow.

I got 3 views

side: (don't worry, I'll fix the flat look)

any idea's about the eye sockets?...

PureFire

the eye sockets look way too far open...like your frightened, but without the facial expression....maybe bring the eyelids down a little to get them looking more relaxed

Thanks PureFire! I'm going to work on that tomorrow (can't believe I didn't see that, lol, probably too much coffee today :insane: ) I'll post an update tomorrow.
