slice56 03-12-2003, 05:34 AM i am really wanting to do a desert scene with some of my cars, and i was wondering if there was a tutorial for dust or something similar to it. I have never messed with max particles until now, and i cant get it to look like dust yet. any tuts for it out there?

i did a dust tut in a book a long time ago, i think on max 2.5 or somethin. anyways u used a parray with spheres, have the parray to emit from the wheels or whatever object is gonna create the dust.
use spheres, for matrials, use a face map with noise. just use the colors u need for the dust in the noise map.
this a simple tut, it turned out pretty well if i remember correctly.
hope this helps

There's quite a bit you can do to create dust. The easiest is to use Facing particles. This is a particle type that consists of planar polygons that always face the camera. If you face map these with a radial gradient masked by a Particle Age map in the opacity channel you can create this soft shape that will blend together with the particles.
You could do the same with sphere using a falloff map in the opacity channel to get rid of the sphere's hard edge.
