After clearing it with the powers that be (heavyness), the MGAC has returned to this section of CGTalk. It wasn't gettin' any love in the UGAC forum, so we're going to try again.

So here's the challenge, ya pansies:

MGAC - 31 - The Twelve Triangle Challenge!

Your mission, should you choose to accept it (as if you could resist) is to make a character, vehicle, weapon, environment, item, or other miscellaneous object using only twelve triangles.

Yes, twelve. One two. 12.

You may not, under any circumstances, exceed the twelve triangle limit, but you may—if you wish—use fewer than twelve triangles.

So, you might decide you just want to make a fancy box. That's cool; I've seen some pretty neat box textures around. But the point of this challenge is to go above and beyond what has been done before. We want rigged characters, race cars with turning wheels, planet-destroying behemoth weapons that only a god could wield. And all with those twelve little triangles.

Take a look at what happened the last time we tried this, and see if you think you can beat what they did. (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=39&t=373690) Especially take a look at ElFuego's, Arrangemonk's, and kenny_bsp's entries to see just how much is possible with a measly twelve or fewer tris.

So, the specs:

Triangle budget: 12
Texture budget: As many of whatever you want at any size up to 2048x2048 as long as it isn't a displacement map.

Guidelines for final entries:

You must provide at least a still render with textures and a screengrab from your 3D software with edged faces or wireframes turned on so we can verify the twelve triangle claim. Animations and beauty renders are totally sweet, but not necessary.

GO!

This sounds interesting, I may give it a go if I come up with a good idea. I think the big turn off for the other challenge was the music theme. I certainly couldn't think up anything I wanted to make for that.

Also, you forgot to mention a deadline.

Also, you forgot to mention a deadline.I actually realized that just a couple of minutes ago. The contest will last a week, from today until Tuesday next week with the deadline being about twelve noon US Pacific timezone.

I'm in. My entry is an incredibly lame communication satellite. UVs are done (:p), I just need to paint the textures.

You're using what, 10 triangles there? You could probably add a satellite dish with the two extra tris.

Good start Tronno, nice to see it's not a crate :p

I've been on a bit of an Egyptian kick lately, and I was thinking of doing a obelisk at first, but that was much too cube-like. Now I'm going to be trying a winged scarab beetle.

I'm gonna try to enter this one. I've got two 12 tri models done (no highpoly), but I'm having a hell of a time with the UVs. It's not that UVing a 12 tri model is hard.. it's that my freaking scale manipulators have gone missing again. I think it's due to my graphics card not being fully compatible with Maya.. sure sucks though. I think I'll just manually scale the UVs with the move manipulator (before that one disappears too!). Pics later.

Anytime I've had that happen, I either had to delete the preferences file for maya, or re-install my graphics drivers. Might be worth a try.

Yeah, I thought I'd do some texture baking for the hell of it :) The sign is actually baked from a mesh as well with the lights painted on afterwards. Just me being silly I guess :)

heres a short vid of the animation, check it out. (quicktime - 320x240 - 4.97mb)
www.mgrote.com/helpouts/12trihand.mov (http://www.mgrote.com/helpouts/12trihand.mov)

uses two diffuse maps (double sided material)
one opacity map

and thats it!

Really great stuff, guys. I really like that hand.

psychojohno: Do you think you might be able to get a bit more detail out of the normal map? Try to get the locking mechanisms and stuff in there and it'll look sweet!

Psychojohno, do an ambient occlusion pass as well (or just take the blue channel from the normal map), might help with the textur.

Grotey, nice one, reminds me of Monty Python

Freddo, cool :D

And now something totally different: a bunch of black (huh?) Finnish fellows celebrating 1st of May in Lapland:
http://www.kasmaris.com/video/12_tri_DIF_render.jpg

and wire for that, behind the camera view:
http://www.kasmaris.com/video/12_tri_Wire_view.gif

triangle count:
1 for the ground
2 for the falling snow (UV animated, lookAt to camera)
3 for the tipi
6 for the bunch of drunken Finnish people (vertex animated)

See them dance here: (1,6MB quicktime) (http://www.kasmaris.com/video/12tri_anim.mov)

As you can see, I ain't no texture artist :)

It's a local folk dance called "lets hold each others vertices". And get drunk. That's what they do around here around this time of year.

Cutie. We have those around our house on spring time. Before cat eats them away. Oh, wait, it's got lasers! I guess they'd get angry, eventually :)

MrGrotey, that tripod is totally awesome :D Great animation.
Lopoly Jellyfish!: 5 jellyfish at 2 triangles apiece, and a 2-triangle plane with alphamapped specks on it just in front of the camera.(Texture not shown here). 1024 textures, rendered with some fog....and voila! Normal map doesn't really show up, but *shrug*

No time for normals, and only one model. Could've been worse! Without Yungimoto's help, I wouldn't have had even this! :D

edit: I forgot to mention texture specs. 2 X 1024X1024 (1 color and 1 alpha).

Didn't see this until tonite, but wanted to jump in on it anyway, sounded like fun. I'm not usually a low-poly modeler, but I figured I couldn't make too big of a mess outta 12 triangles.

This is supposed to be a bit of a cross between the Scorpio constellation, and a mechanical monster. I used 3, 128x128 textures, figured I ought go small there given the nature of the this challenge. Rigged and animated, was a pretty fun challenge all around.

Nice work all around guys.

THE CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED

No entries submitted after this post will be judged, but feel free to keep posting if you like.

The winner is mrgrotey for his three excellent entries, the hand, tripod and impossi-cube. My favorite of all is the tripod; it reads well, has a decent silhouette, and that walk cycle looks great.

It's nice to see so much creativity and so much done with such a minimal budget, so thank you guys for making things very interesting.

Mrgrotey, it's now on you to start the next MGAC. Pick a theme, choose texture and triangle budgets, and let's go!

Hi Yunga! very nice work man and welcome on the forum! don't worry about posting in a old 12 tri challenge we' ve seen it and we know you can do this!

I for one look forward to seeing more of your work... can we maybe tempt you to try another MGAC? like the one that starts coming week (deadline of current is tomorrow so that might be a little short on time)

once again welcome and nice work!
