View Full Version : Free video tutorials
DigArts 04-24-2007, 05:27 PM I've posted several free video tutorials on working with nozzles, patterns and shading techniques. I'll be adding even more soon. Most are short, 5-8 minute tutorials that walk through various painting techniques while suggesting configuration set-ups for working with nozzles and patterns to speed workflow.
Texturing professionals working with 3D may find some of the concepts particularly useful. The URL is http://www.gardenhose.com/videos.htm (http://www.gardenhose.com/videos.htm) Be sure to download the freebie files that go with them, and have fun :)

Great Dennis...thanks...Have you done a commercial set of tutorials for Jungle DVD? I purchased a while back, but never used them because even finding out where to put the files inside painter was too confusing for me. I am sure I could have done it, but I had so little time.
Your free tutorials were clear and understandable and made me interested to go back and try out what I bought. I will now peruse the gardenhose site to see if there are any tutorials, free or commercial that go further into the use of the product.
Many thanks.

Wow, thanks Mike. I've been aware of the problem you mention for some time. I just recently had opportunity to create some videos. I look forward to doing more.
If you have any suggestions, I'll be glad to take a look. I've worked with these tools for so long that I can't always see where they pose problems for those unfamiliar with them.
The thing about videos is they make it so much easier to understand, assuming the guy doing them doesn't get too confused, or go off on tangents (I'm working on it :)

Hi Dennis,
Let's just chalk it up to my being lazy. I bought Painter 9.5 and it came without a manual and I couldn't follow where to load some of the files that came with Jungle DVD. It took a bit of perusing through the forums to find out how to do some of the extreme basics; where nozzle files go, brushes. etc.
Actually I am far from lazy, but my schedule is so packed that I barely have time to do anything but jump in and be productive with the software tools I am familiar with and to make time to learn new, and often time-saving, programs is an extreme luxury. I know there are many out there who have the time to learn and experiment with a lot of programs, as I once did...back in the days of Aldus Freehand version 1 and before (Commodore Amiga days.)
So, I am not certain there a lot who would buy a tutorial on the extreme basics of Painter. I use painter a lot but have little time to experiment with even the brush creator (which I know would make life much easier). I just pick the defaults and try to make them work for what I need to accomplish.
But I loved your videos. They were concise and direct with just the proper dash of observation of the natural world (such as explaining where most of the leaves should be on a branch). I would definitely be interested in any future videos you decide to do with Painter and Gardenhose.
I am currently doing an animated film (3d -primary tool, 3ds max9) and am under a tight deadline and understaffed. My main occupation is oil painting and I will return to it after this project is over. I believe that Painter can be incorporated into easel painting so I believe my interest in this program will be ongoing. I have been very successful, having sold every painting I did over the last 12 years. A lot of what I do, though it is in the landscape/seascape genre, is mostly out of my imagination. They look like hawaiian landscapes, but actually they are all exagerated. JUngle DVD seemed to contain a lot of the "look" I incorporate in my oils.
So much for my ranting...great videos...I can't say "thanks" enough.
