View Full Version : Leviathan (GameArtisans Competition)
GavinG 04-24-2007, 07:36 AM Hey Guys,
Figured I'd cross post onto this forum to show the progress on my latest character. It's for the competition over at Game Artisans and the subject is to create a huge character (very huge.) So, I decided to go with a large monster that prefers watery/swampy areas.
Just roughing out the base mesh now:

And the concept I made (not so great, i know :P)

looking good so far, only thing I notice is the face looks longer/more reptilian in the concept which I kinda liked ;)

Thanks man! Yeah, I kind of went with something less reptilian in the model...heh.
did a little more work on the guy, any suggestions? Thinking about moving onto sculpting soon...

nice base, reminds of your Dominance entry though, replacing the stoney head for a big old belly. love the face

WOw it's looking realy fantastic :) Greate polygon floow you have there, it look like from zbrush already :p its soo rounded and all the muscles ar quite visible :)
And now i mas make some crit... his shoulders and upper arms seems to be little to thin, his head could been bigger with not so exponeted pharynx(like in concept). Tail is also problematic, maybe you should make longer tail witch would be laying on ground ?
Ah I dont have anytyhing more to say :p Hope I was a bit of help to you :)

Looking good. I'd make the neck a bit longer though. He looks like a pug. I think I like your concept a bit more than the model, but they're both cool.
Looking good dude, following the concept pretty close. How about making the forearms slightly longer and thicker and hunching the shoulders a bit, try and make him look a bit more top heavy a bit like a gorilla.
Keep up the good work.

iLegacy: Thanks :)
Scudz: Thanks man, yeah I think maybe I'm in the rut...kind of following the same style and stuff. Hoping my next project will be an extreme difference.
Furin: Thanks man! I've done some more work on his neck, but the shoulders and arms are kind of a stylized choice. Obviously it wouln't work in the real world...but I wanted to do somethign funky. The tail has been changed a bit, long for more balance. Thanks again.
blacker: Thanks :)
MDR: Thanks :) I've pumped up his forearms a bit, will probably hunch him over more when it comes time to rig him.
Did some sculpting on this guy, hoping to get most of it done by tonight or tomorrow. The barnacles are kind of just place holder, I think most things like that will be added once I start texturing. This is a max viewport with the pieces imported from ZB. Obviously it's not as high as it can be in ZB so some things look chunky.

Thanks for the feedback!
A little update on this guy, did some work on his legs and fixed up the issue with his stomach cut and chest (although it's not pictured here because I forgot until just now)...A little more and I think I'll begin a low poly version.

amazing detail! keep it up

I like the details too - except of the lips. I would like them more "clear". If you look your concept or your un-zbrushed model there are more clear, non-dottet lips. In my mind thats better than this dottet, "sick", lips.
p.s. why the breast muscle is so structured? it's a nice detail but not correct in anatomy way. it seems that he has ribs in his breast...only a brainstorm :)

very nice model and details but i think the guy is too ripped for his size and bulk, i hope u are getting what i mean, he is ripped every where ,like hes got ripped delts , lats ,pecs even abs.
but still awesome job so far :bounce:

I'm loving it so far. Huge, fat, awesomely detailed monster things rule.

05-07-2007, 02:17 AM
GArriola83, Ramseus: Thanks :)
dreamsunlimited: Guess I got a little carried away in ZBrush, hehe.
iLegacy: Thanks for the feedback! I agree about the chest, I think in the low poly version (below) it's not as noticable though and looks more natural. The import I last posted was a lower res version of my ZBrush model before i smoothed out some of the chest detail.
Anyways, did some more work over the past few days, I've kind of been distracted with playing hockey lately :P Here is the low poly version, 4726 tris in total although i am going to be adding alpha planes on him for seaweed and stuff. So, the total will probbaly be somewhere around 4800.

That is looking really good now, the normal detail works really well on the low poly model. Look forward to the finished model keep it up!

Thanks guys!
dpizzle: I use Zmapper for my initial normal maps, can't be bothered to fiddle around in Max. After that I'll do some overlays in photoshop as I need them.
A little bit of progress, first pass on the head and body textures. It strays a bit away from the colours I initially planned on...but I just wasn't feeling it once I tried it on him. So I played around with it. Also, I was originally planning on having barnacles on his back but after thinking about the scale, I think each barnacle would work out to be the size of a human head. So, instead, I'm going to dot im with little glowing bumps, like the lure on his head. I guess it could pass as a fake school of fish to the unsuspecting victim.

Oooooohh thats lookin good! Have you ever thought of writing a tutorial for how you make your models? Your work flow seems to be very sound and pulls off some great results!
Keep up the great work!

Hey that looks realy realy cool! If you want you can give a short "tutorial" about how you startet and painted that great texture. It would be very interesting for me to hear what footage you are using, brushes, blendmodes etc.

Great model and great tutorial! My only crit is it looks a little similiar to your recent contest entree. Bulked forearms, big belly look. Still sweet work though.

MDR: Cheers buddy, I'm thinking about making another "Making Of" for 3D Total using this character and will go more in depth about how I work (texturing, sculpting, etc.) If there is any interest, I'll definitely see it through as I think my schedule is going to be more relaxed after this competition (need to make time for video games and street hockey :D )
andrei313: Thnaks and thanks for posting the link :)
iLegacy: Thanks. The textures are about 95% hand painted using a few different brushes and a bunch of layers. Th only real photosourcing I've been doing on him is a subtle snake skin overlay to kind of break it up. It's a big change for me as I usually photo source most of my textures. Like I mentioned earlier though, I'm thinking about doing a more in depth tutorial for 3D Total or some other website if there is any interest...so...stay tuned :D
Cyborgguineapig: Heh, yeah...i see what you mean. I think I've gotten myself into a rut with this kind of style...maybe my next character I'll try something different. I've been thinking about making a comic book hero...
PhilOsirus: Thanks man.
dpizzle: Cheers.
Did a little more work on this guy over the weekend and I think i'm on th ehome stretch. The deadline is about a week away and I think I'll have enough time to add a little more polish, do some tweaks, make a base and pose him.

Hey nice work Gavin G...
All the volumes are still as clear now textured just as they were when you showed the base material, nothing has been lost...good job...posing this big guy will be fun!....will re-create the same pose in the concept?
good luck with the comp too!...
GavinG
05-15-2007, 05:06 AM
Thanks johnwoo.
Not sur eif I'm going to do the same one as in the conept or not, I'm toyign with one now with a lower viewing angle...hoping to sell the sense of scale more. Not really sure how much further I want to push the textures, I'm open to any suggestions :) Untill then I think I'm going to start working on a base. It's hard to make something quick when the scale is this big...I was thinking about making seaweed on him...but it would need to be huge clumps of seaweed in order to make it out...we shall see.
Thanks again,
Gav

That turned out pretty cool :) I think you should definitely try to get some seaweed since it would add a bit of colour to it. Your main colours seem to be light yellowish and brown and that doesn't really feel like an underwater creature to me, I miss a bit of colour but it still looks cool so don't take it too seriously :)

oH baby! I love it! Hey if you want: post you textures :D
GavinG
05-18-2007, 04:13 PM
Thanks guys, sorry for the late reply but work has kind of been keeping me busy lately. I'll definitely post some textures once I have the finals ready, I'm not sur eif I have much more time to tweak the textures as I think the majority of people are cool with them for now. As for the base, I'll probably just make a small patch of mud and maybe some broken down walls for this normal sized male human to hide behind. He seems to have a roman (athough mostly fantasy) look to him...so maybe some busted columns or something. Nothing too crazy as I probably won't have the time :\
Thanks for the feedback!

Just been playing around a little with a base, background and lighting setup. The lighting setup now is more or less what I used on Thrull, I may keep playing with it.
I'm going with the idea that the area would be like a dried up land that used to be deep water. So, as the water started to evaporate, this creature started to venture onto the land.
I also toyed with adding a few patches of seaweed hanging off of him. Not really sold on it yet, let me know what you guys think.

Hey Galvin, realy nice design, proportions and model. Awesome texture work & normal map!
IMO it does'nt realy look like theres many places where the seaweed would cling to him due to the form. Where you have seaweed atm is fine but I would'nt push it any further.
Very cool creature.
GavinG
05-21-2007, 01:20 AM
Thanks man! You're right about the seaweed...I'm thinking of scraping it anywyas. Might have been worth the try, but I'm not sure if it's going to work. The thing that bothers me about it is the scale...the strands would need to be huge. If he was a normal sized creature, it may make more sense. Plus, like you said, not many places to attach to.
Trying out a few new things here:

oh yeah, would you mind posting his normal map and color/spec maps?
and i would love to see this guy crawling out of a swamp...think about it, that would be a cool pose to put him in.
urgaffel
05-21-2007, 08:17 AM
Quick suggestion for the pose: why not have one foot raised as if he's about to squish the hero dude? And while it's nice work, does he really need a black outline?
PhilOsirus
05-22-2007, 12:16 AM
You need to do a turnaround video or at least one where the light moves so we can really the normal map in full effect, plus the specular:)
GavinG
05-22-2007, 12:51 AM
codyalday: Thanks.
dpizzle: I may post them next time. I'll need to make a sheet of them for the contest, so I'll definitely be posting something.
urgaffel: not a bad idea :) Although, to be honest, I'm kind of getting tired of this guy and am looking forward to just calling him done, heh. If I can get up enough ambition to change the pose, I may do it :P
PhilOsirus: I could make one, for sure. It is a shame that the contest doesn't accept MOVs or something....desfinitely get to see more of the model that way.
Did some playing around with colours and lights. The last image I showed off was a darker version of the older skin but after getting some feedback, I'm attempting to show more colour in him...I guess more towards what the original renders were rather than the blacker ones. Let me know what you think.

It's awesome with the added colors! I think this is the best version. The only thing I dislike in this whole thing is his eye. I love the whole no pupil thing most of the time, but on this one, I'd really like to see something which gives depth to the eye.. It doesn't even look spherical right now. I'd like to see some sort of frog/snake/dragon eye texture. Other than that, it's looking pretty wicked!

Hell Yeah!!...very cool man...I too gotta second a turnaround...that would be superb!!...also it would have been very cool to see him posed like in the concept as it was such a strong pose, but it does not detract at all from the the overall creature...looking forward to your next thread man...:)

Hey Hey, thanks guys!
johnwoo: I may hand this over to an animator buddy of mine who will probably do a lot more funky things with it...if he does something and wants to show it off...I'll direct him here :P
All of your feedback has been really helpful. I've been distracted with work and other things lately so I haven't had a chance to set up a swanky turnaround...but I will as soon as I get a chance.
