View Full Version : character: oh god, another alien
ninjacore 03-11-2003, 11:01 PM ok, doing this for uni. its a remake of this character i came up with last year. The thing is, i'm kinda unsure about the mouth and the ear, they kinda look weird.
Any guidance will be appreciated.

lo poly mesh side view
I think there is alot of detail lost in the model. The model looks way different then the 2D concept. I think if you want the model to look like the concept, you actually need to follow the shapes :) (no offense)
Keep tweaking those verts.

ok last one.
Aros- The concept i have is really just a guide, when i get going with something i start chainging bits here and there, like the chin.
But i kinda want a sharper brow, and the ears more similar to the sketch.
I'm trying my hardest to use the edgeloop rule, and keep everything flowing.
i'm stuck on doing the inside of the mouth, because i want to have this guy speaking in an animation.

ninjacore...
when you finish that, you want a rival race for that fool? Wanna model one of my drawings?

you can if you want...
anywho, its lookin' good, but it looks a bit blocky; however, you're really staying true to the concept.... cant wait to see more! :D

I like the front of the neck better in the concept drawing. From the side view of the model, the neck needs to come down and forward in order to meet with the jaw right under the mouth. Otherwise, if this character were to eat something, the food would have to go from his mouth up into his brain case and then down the throat. Although stylistically I like this look, you might run into some problems later when trying to animate him without making his lower jaw appear to be flapping.

Hey Gremlin, thats a cool idea, even tho i have a rival race for my dude already. But if i have time, i would love to model your character :buttrock:
zzacmann- your damn right. I like the concept design on the neck too, and i've pulled it down a lot more and starting to add tendins in the neck and stuff.
I'll have a few more renders by tonight.

ok. i've modelled the inside of the mouth today and added some teeth and widened the neck more.
i was wondering wether i should attach the teeth and gums to the head mesh for animation,or is there a way to link a peice of geometry to a section of an edit mesh??

ok, heres the body. i'm fine with the upper body, but the legs have taken ages, and i threw in some rediculous feet.

The head is too stretched sideways... Move it a little closer together and you'll notice a big improvement.

I was really digging this guy until you put the lame body on him...

The body just doesn't seem appropriate for the head. His head is all miss shaped and cool. Then the body is all simplistic and humaniod. Maybe make him skiny with long fingers...he looks impish...maybe go that direction, but keep him an alien.

ok, some slight changes... The head has been moved in a touch, and it looks better, but i'm struggling with the body. I'm beginning to hate this!!
in the original drawings i have of this fella , hes really skinny and long, and fairly simplistic, and for some reason, this looks a lot better on paper than it does in 3D!
i took the waist and lower chest in towards the middle, and raised the crotch a bit. I'm unsure about the bulky shoulders too! so far the only thing that i'm happy with is the arms, which will have these long chunky fingers at the end...
thanks for these crits by the way, i really need them!

I would have to agree. you went with nice sharp edges for the head, and then the body looks a little Gumby. I love the head but I think you lose something in the body.
Just my opinion.

ok, i asked some friends, and its seems that body had to go. so i started again, this time extruding from the neck edges, and going from there. I used the same arms in the old body.
I hope you like this one!:bounce:

That one looks a little better, how about defining that hump on his back, it has a nice touch.

heres my guy with some hands and feet. i think i'm done now becuse i really need to texture and rig this guy up. time is damn short for me you see!
anyways, crits welcome on this one, i think i might know what will be said, but right now, if i have to pull another vertice and then have to wait for max to catch up, i think i'll explode.
cheers!
