View Full Version : Character: Robotic Teenager
Dan Harms 03-11-2003, 10:16 PM Hiya all. I'm 16, trying to teach myself CG, and having limited success. ;)
This character isn't rigged because I don't yet know how to rig.
All my attempts so far have resulted in spectacular failure. Any ideas how or where to learn rigging?

the feet are the freshest things I have ever seen. I might just have to jack your idea. but I just started using maya this year (im 18) and I`ve been using this really crappy animation program called infini-D for the past 4 years. but just keep teaching yourself. fuk schools, that crap is WAY to expensive for what it is. if you can`t drive yourself, how is someone else going to. go to art school if you feel you need art direction, but I don`t think you do.
anyay I needed to rant about that. phew, I feel better now. i`m gonna go watch home movies. peece,
oh I did this when I was 17 and your work schools it.

hehe, im 16 too! about a year into 3d now.
Its a good model, i can't really find anything wrong with it per se. Because the whole design isn't "technical" it makes everything look rite? hmm i didn't write that the way i wanted it to sound! o well.
Good luck to you with 3d.

I have a college fund that my parents started, so I was able to use that to purchase max. It's not cracked if that's what you're wondering. I'm pretty opposed to warez. :shame:

student version of max is only 600...900 with character studio and a bunch of plugin packages. I got CS and it makes rigging characters easier than modeling them. Rigging faces for facial expressions is the tough part. Luckily I stayed in contact with one of my teachers who now works at Nintendo and he just happens to live 3 minutes from my house so he shows me all kinds of useful stuff. I'm 16 too and it helps alot to have a mentor to solve all your problems. Look for my work soon on The Hapless Hero CG Challenge! GWork Dan!

Great model got bags of character and really begs to be animated. The tutorial for rigging that comes with R 5 is far from bad so persevere and have fun. :)

Hi... Congratulations!!... Itīs a good begining!!... You have talent!!... Maybe your character needs some more detail in the face area, just that.
About rigging, visit: http://www.comet-cartoons.com/
There are tutorials and resources for max and maya... and funny animations.
Keep it up!

first of very nice, i just got into 3D about a year ago myself, (i'm 19 for another month yet btw) so it's easy for me to say that it's much better than i could have done at 17  lol
but seriously, i don't really see why you'd want to rig it per se. it's a robot, meaning it's articulated. rigs are for deformations generally. now you'll have to bare with me b/c i'm in the process of learning max... but in maya, all you'd have to do is create a rig for him & parent different parts of him to the individual joints instead of binding him. binding a rig would just lead to deformations & since robots are generally made out of solid whirling parts, you don't really need deformations. i don't know how well that translates into max or if it would even help you at all, but there you are! :) keep it up!

Ha, ha. That model has a helluva lot of style. I really, really like it. For some reason the ribcage, with the heart, guts, etc. looks like it fits. If you can do something with the face I think it would make the character even stronger visually. I honestly don't know what you should try, because I'm not on the same wavelength as yourself. I think it would be worth your while to see this character through. cool, cheers!!

Ya, about the rigging, I would mix and match. I use maya as well. For those robotic joints that dont need to deform (bend, twist, stretch, etc.) but just turn in the direction the arm is moving ( like a ball joint ) just make this guy's skeleton, and parent the actual joint object (geometry ) to the cooresponding joint, then when the character moves that body part, lets say his arm, the joint will turn correctly. But you can also bind some of the geometry to the skeleton, it doesnt have to be all one or the other, and binding is very easy in maya. The only hard part is assigning the "weight" of each joint to the different point on the geometry, there is a membership tool that I use in maya that is great for this, whereby you can just select and deselect the points you want influenced by a given joint, or you can also use the paint tool in maya to literally paint onto your character the values of influence. Keep at it.
Are you going to school to study animation or 3d animation?

Thanks for the tips everyone. I'll play around with it, see if I can work out some way to animate this guy. I'm not sure what to do on the face.
Waters-
I'm not enrolled in any animation or 3d schools right now, although I have been looking at entering into a program.
Anybody have suggestions there? Good experiences at particular schools?

Nice work! Im 16 myself and I wasted a year or so with Animation Master. Its a good thing you have the oppurtunity to deal with a real program. How long did it take you to make that thing? What made you come up with that? You should really try the new CGchallenge, it would be good for you.
