Title: Church on sunday
Name: Bernhard Rieder
Country: United States
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, VRay

I wanted to find a nice solution for gras, and so I decided to start working on it. I also decided to make a scene file, which is usable for production. That means, fast in rendertime, and the material shoudl be usable on low poly objects as wells as on high poly objecs, for small pieces for detailshots as well as for huge planes like 15.000x15.000 feet.

The hedges are just oxes, the little trees are cones. the horse and he dog are high poly. I was surprises about the result and also about the render speed.

Made in 3dsmax9, with vray sun & sky.
I hope you like it.

Bernhard

Grass in your scene definetely works. I have to say that the material on the horse is looking abit odd but the greens on rest of the scene work very well, well done!

Can you please share with us how you made the grass material i.e. procedural or bitmap?

Also what was the render time like for this shot?

Thanks

Hello friends and thank you for you kind words.

Sorry for my late reply.

@OzzTheForester:
The gras is a vraymaterial, and I've used texture maps with a lot of mixing. So, no procedural.
The core is the displacment. So, at first I've tried fur, but that really didn't work for me, because I wanted to have a fast render, usable on a huge plane, and on high and low poly also.

The render time took about 8 minutes in the final version you can see.
Everything is optimzed for rendering and production, because if I do have time, I would like to make a short animation.

thx a lot and hear from you guys,
bernhard

Hello !

Well, usually I use straight polymodeling.... it was really a challenge to get the gras material, and and the right look for a clear and sunny summer day...
