View Full Version : Crome shader
FlexGiddy 03-11-2003, 08:59 PM Can anyone tell me where I can find a tutorial on how to make a crome shader or where I can download a GOOD crome shader...?

chrome, gold etc. are very hard to get. imo there is no real good chrome shader.
first you have to think like a photographer. if they shoot chrome stuff they take big white standins and place them around the objects. this usually takes days to get it really work. chrome highlights mean structure. if you have a flat piece like a plane, the only chance to get the chrome work is to bring in structures to the highlights, otherwise it will always look flat. so the actual shader for that could be a simple anisotropic one (at least i use it all the time). then you can do it in two ways. first one is to make the same like the photographer. so you create white planes and place it around the object, and play with the reflection. don't forget to switch on ray. the other way is to use a reflection map. so i tend to use a environment ball on the reflected color (on the aniso switch off the aniso reflectivity) and put a black-white ramp on the image of the env ball. now play with the ramp. do whatever you wanna do (use the ipr). you don't need ray for that. so the second way always works the best for me.

There is a very good tutorial movie about that on www.gnomononline.com , it's how to make a shader for an extremly polished car =), but it costs to be amember =/.

Yeah Sevenip, I haven't been able to find any GOOD quality shaders for chrome or gold, ect. Spenen showed me a pretty good shader though.. Okay so what you're saying is basically not to be concerned with a shader... that it's all in the environment...? Hmm....never thought about trying that.... I'll give it a try to see what it does..Before I do I want to make sure I'm understanding what you're saying... Are you saying that the shader for the crome object should be white....?

no no. if you would have a chrome ball with no lights, it would appear to be nearly black. so what i always do if i make gold etc i set the color of the aniso shader to nearly black. the i just put the thing with the env ball and ramp that i mentioned on the reflected color. and then i just basicly play. with the ramp at first and with the angle and roughness etc of the aniso shader. if i make gold, i set the spec color to something like yellow. just play, you'll definitly get a good result for that out.
here's a picture i've made with that.
