View Full Version : Easier way to automate UV unwrapping tweaks?
Mthson 04-23-2007, 07:35 AM Is it normal for artists to tweak their UV unwrapping by hand, trying to to prevent distortion in the checker mapping? It seems like a program could do this a lot faster than we can do it by eye.
(I primarily but not exclusively use 3Dsmax)

Yes, it's absolutely normal. UV maps always need some adjustments, even the ones made by fancy pelting algorithms (although, admittedly, nicely pelted UV's usually require a little less tweaking than the more traditional planar, cylindrical, etc projections).

There's no substitue for tumbling an object around the viewport and hand editing the UV's. Especially since it's kind of subjective as to what areas are important...
Incidently we've been playing with Roadkill in our studio since a guy here coded up the new 3dsMax plugin - should be released within the next couple of weeks on their site. Almost makes UV-ing seem fun again...
..and it's all free!

Yeah, I started using roadkill for maya recently as well, and it's pretty bitchin.
