View Full Version : can you spin the viewport in mid action?

In Maya, and other packages, you can spin the viewport while in the midst of an action, like, cutting a polygon or extruding , etc.

If you try that in Max, it seems to stop the action.

Specifically, I am hoping to use the CUT polygon tool, and be able to move around the object so I can cut from one edge to another to another, etc...like selecting and connecting edge rings.

Thanks

if you have a mouse with a wheel, you can just click the wheel down and that will allow you to rotate the current viewport with out loosing your current tool...cut.

I know it works fine with microsoft mice but i dont know about other mice...i dont see any reason why it wouldnt, just as long as windows recognizes the mouse wheel.

Are you sure? I am using Max5 and when I click the mouse wheel i lose my tool (plus, just clicking the wheel is pan, not rotate...)

I tried my logitech and Wacom mice. Both give me the same thing.

hmmm maybe its control or shift click, but yeah im sure it doesnt de-select the tool. because i was using it to cut something one day as a test around a box, and it was fine.

hmmm i will check when i get home.

howdy !

it's "alt" you have to press while holding down your wheel's button or middle button if you've got one and you'll be able to use "interactive arc rotate" i think it's called - not sure it does not deselects tool, though, but if it doesn't it's nice to know : )

"interactive arc rotate" is just alt+middle click...like you said, but that ends the cut operation.

That is how I always rotate the view...so I know that doesn't hold the operation:annoyed:

i dont know about rotating, but you can pan by pressing the i key. that doesn't interrupt the current command. i know its not what you asked for but its a similar issue.
hope it helped abit at least :)

oh, and btw, alt+mMb cancels the command, so does mMb (for panning)

hmm mi just tried it and it did kinda de-select the tool......try this one instead it is a great cut too and i m pretty sure you can rotate around the object using the alt+mmb combo
