hey all

ive got a small question.

ive been rendering out some animation inside 3Ds max using its PALDV1 settings (720x576) as im going to produce a animation for tv. anyway, when i bring in my raw animation into after effects, and set the composition to PALDV1, the animation is too thin.

ive done some test renders, and to get my renders to fit perfectly I can render out as custom and just change the pixel size to 720x576, but the pixel aspect is 1.25 and the image aspect is 1. now rendering out like this will work, but jus wondered if im doing something wrong, as surely PALDV1 should be the same no matter what program i use.

cheers, dean

In the project window click your clip/sequence and drag it onto the make new composition button. this will create a new composition with the settings saved in the sequence like size, pixel aspect, length etc.

i wouldn't render in nosquare pixels in Max, but square pixels and do that aspect ratio connversion in AE when rrendering out the final result.

edit: There is also a preview button for no square pixel compostions, don't know exactly where, some where beneath the preview window if I remember right. Activate it and the stretching will disapear.

Hi,

can't say what the specific problem is, but with some formats pixel aspect ratios get interpreted differently in different applications. I've also had some problems where I exported a lossless Quicktime in 720*576, with PAL non-square pixel aspect ratio, but when I imported it into my DV authoring software, it was off. Funny thing is, if I exported as DV AVI in the same resolution, there was no problem.

So, if you're dead sure you rendered out in 720*576, and that your AE composition is the same resolution, you can just resize the footage in AE, to fit the composition. That should give a pixel match.

THe problem your having is an Interpritory problem (is that a word?). when you import you file rendered in max the render may have rendered it out in D1 pixel-aspect, but when it enters AF this is nullified basically.
What you need to do is to select your file in AF (not in the timeline but in project) and right-click. then choose intreprit footage (shortcut for this is ctrl-F) there you can re-interprit the footage to 1.067 pixelaspect and regain those 48,24 pixels you seem to loose. its a bi*ch that you have to do it manually. But theres your problem, here's the solution BOB's your uncle.

Also note that AE by default shows your pixels with a 1:1 correspondence to comp-pixel to screen-pixel. This is so you will really see each pixel projected onto an individual screen pixel, and not be fooled by scaling artifacts that can both introduce, or hide, problems.

You need to go into the comp and explicitly enable "pixel aspect ratio" display. I don't know where it is in 7 exactly (I'm on AE 5.5, god forbid!) but when you do, AE will scale the display of your comp so your "aspect ratio" is correct. But due to this scaling, by it's very nature, there is no longer a 1-to-1 correspondence between image pixels and your computer screen pixels (and the scalilng inherently introduces a bit of 'smoothing') you aren't really seeing a completley "detailed" view of what you are doing this way.

So my advice is - generally work with the "pixel aspect ratio compensation" OFF, and turn it on occasionally for a sanity check (so your CG circles don't become eggs)
