i have a question about the awful flickering that can occur when using a lighting setup that involves radiosity and bounce cards.
what causes this?
and, more importantly, how can i fix this?
do you guys know what i'm talking about?
when it renders out the light looks as though it is reflecting off a moonlit pool or something (constantly moving)
would upping the rays per evaluation help?

You could try several things and see if they help... turn on shading noise reduction to reduce the splotchy look. Turn up your ambient light. Increase the number of rays per eval. If those don't help then I don't know...

it always comes down to the render time game doesn't it. I've been working with radiosity for a long time, and i still don't think i fully understand every option in the global illumination panel. i'll try uping the RPE

I asked Dave Jerrard (http://www.advanstarbooks.com/lightwave/) what might cause flickering; here's his guesses:
1) "Interpolated" radiosity might be the culprit. For real radiosity, use "Backdrop Only" or "Monte Carlo." The "Interpolated" setting cheats on the radiosity by taking only a few samples here and there, instead of sampling the whole scene.
2) Instead of using radiosity, try replacing the bounce cards with Area Lights. If you want to use Area Lights with radiosity, use "Backdrop Only" radiosity, since "Backdrop Only" radiosity renders fast. You can use other types of radiosity with Area Lights, but it will greatly slow down your render.

it's awesome to get a well thought of answer to a problem.
monte carlo always takes a whole lot longer, and i have always hesitated to use backdrop. i'll give it a whirl.
i think those bounce cards are really screwing things up a bit, but the character just doesn't seem as rich without them.

only for the sake of clarification have a look at eki's overcaster plugs for cheating this kinda setup. Even area lights will produce noize is you don't use a lot of AA (render hit - ouch) :p

I questioned Dave Jerrard (http://www.advanstarbooks.com/lightwave/) about this; here's his suggestion:
Instead of high anti-aliasing, try checking the "Shading Noise Reduction" box in the "Global Illumination" section of the Light Properties panel to reduce the noise of area lights and/or radiosity used in a scene. It will add about ten seconds per frame, but that's still faster than a higher level of AA.

The better thing to do is skip radiosity all together.
Either go with One Ekis plugins or if you can afford it Shadow Designer.
They can produe really good fake radiosity effects.
