at what resolution should I render to output an avi to my dv camera? 800 x 600, 320 x 240? what? any advice would help... what I mean is if I rendered it at 320 x 240, would the outputted ( is that a word?) file take up the full frame on film?

These are my render settings, am I wrong ???

Pal
720x576, Pixel Aspect Ratio = 1.0667

Pal Widescreen
720x576, Pixel Aspect Ratio = 1.4222

NTSC
720x486, Pixel Aspect Ratio = 0.9

NTSC Widescreen
720x486, Pixel Aspect Ratio = 1.2

The spec for DV is 720x480, not 486. 486 is used with Betacam and DigiBeta.

And I think widescreen is 863x480 at 1.2.
