I painted this for a tutorial I'm writing.
The sketch was done with pencils on paper,

I drew the sketch as a value study because I wanted to study the subject like old masters that I admire like Caravaggio for example. The compositon was built entirely around the play of light and shadow. Thank you for the WIP thread for your suggestions.

All the painting was done in PSCS2 I think I learned a lot about values on this one.

Well done! First thing I thought when I saw this was "Very painterly. Incredible interesting play of light and dark". Indeed, quite remeniscent of the old masters. Avast ye! Quite the sassy pirate, ain't he. ;)

Only critique is, his right shoulder looks small when compared to the left.

I have seen it at deviantART, and I still think it is an awesome illustration! Good work on the soft atmosphere.
