Thanks for the link.

Can't see what's so awesome about the 3d features really, for us interested in texturing at least. I mean it's better than nothing but still underwhelming, you can't even paint directly on the object...

"what's cool about this is that you paint on the layer and hit ctrl+s you can actually see the changes directly on the object!!!" lol!?

I really like how the author of the tutorial made that sound convenient. ¬_¬

hi
well ive looked at the 3 small sample tutorial clips on photoshop cs3 extended at digital tutors and i'm somewhat underwhelmed at the moment...

3dmodels in photoshop:-
yup you can move scale rotate you 3d model...but it's only a open gl view..no renderer is 'built in' into photoshop [though these will be one from newtek based on lightwave]..
so for image ''quality'' and using a 3d model 'as is' fr om what i see it's not really much use except for making a proxie psd file...
scale, rotate and move have no gizmos in the interface btw....

texturing in photoshop:-
...was expecting much more than this!...you paint on a 2d flattened out image then hit save....err...am i missing something here as you can already DO this with ANY paint program!....not making my jaw move down in 'y' at all currently!..

not exactly a zbrush, modo or bodypaint killer app is it?....

looks similar to working with tvpaint and it's lwo/uv viewer except you DON'T get a uv overlay to help you!...

if you using max i'd use ghost painter which is actually usable!...
or use combustion to paint your 3d model....

texturing in photoshop extended looks like a gimmick currently...unless there's not showing a whole raft of tools.

so...without a 'renderer it's a dead duck imo....newtek may just save the day with their low cost render plugin though...

bottom line texture painting looks from these videos to be utter frakk!
or am i missing something that's cool?

of course i've not seen ALL of what extended can do but i'm hoping it can load RPF files with camera data and re light rendered scenes and paint on them...also project that onto a 3d mesh much like fusion 5 can...somehow i doubt it though...this seems like an entry level addition..no doubt cs4 will start to 'get it right' after this initial addition of a 3d layer...good idea but it's the first time so it's really simplistic currently by what i've seen so far.

Looks like a cheap novelty (in the 3d world anyway). There have already been quite a few plugins for maya which did this years ago.
If you could paint directly on the model in ps it would be awesome.

yeah i was a little dissapointed too.. especially the vid on adobe site where they put a texture on a can 0_o

Anyways perhaps 2 versions later these functionality will be more mature.

and polyboosts viewport canvas seem more usable and is only $124
have alook at the video
http://www.cmlcreative.com/Videos/PolyBoost2_video.avi

and that's only 1 tool in a whole suite of tools directly inside a 3d app.

I'm afraid it's painfully slow.

or maybe something like this for 3d meshes>

and rpf data

with combustion...

can you see why i'm not too impressed with photoshop cs extended currently..?
esp as it's around £1000.

i love photoshop, but for 3d painting MAXON Body Paint has lot of more better options IMHO, of course you can paint directly in the 3d object, you have projection painting, raybrush painting for paint in real time with raytrace shadows, and where you can see and paint things like transparency, bump....etc.

well on the plus side it does seem like adobe are trying to make ps more diverse.

however after watching those videos it does look like these features are about 3 or 4 years late.

I agree with you guys, but i like the fact that i can comp out some pretty quick story boards this way.

I'm going to wait for the judgement when i get to have a go at it.

Ive found that it works fairly well as a cheap perspective guide. It's not Bodypaint but I'm pretty sure they didn't mean it to be that (yet)

From the video, that paint -> save -> update workflow looks just like Maya to PS connection, ... only without Maya.

I agree with yolao. If you already have Bodypaint (which I think can also use PS filters) and an older version of PS, there's very little reason to update to CS3.

seeing as this will be adobe's first time with a 3d layer in photoshop i'd imagine that the feedback from users thru the cs3 cycle will really help develop cs4's 3d layer tech to be much more advanced for the requirement of 3d models in photoshop..this is just the first step really.

although newtek's renderer plugin for cs3 could make CS3 extended much more useful....we'll have to wait n see what transpires from newtek and adobe plus other 3d plugins from other apps too.

could turn out to be quite useful...time will tell!

Unless your not updating because of 3D. There are lots of other features that can be pretty handy. Smart Filters are really great. Also I like the new UI and the new curve tools. The new vanishing point is nice. I also think the new quick selection and refine edge tools are real time savers. Seriously, the new quick selection tool works really well in almost all situations. It might not be enough for everyone to want to update, but it sure is nice. Im most excited about the integration with Flash and the other adobe products, especially Illustrator and After Effects.

has anyone tried this? How does it load a texture for an OBJ file I wasn't aware OBJ contained that info. Can you just create a new texture for it right in photoshop?
