View Full Version : are maya render layers broken

hello all,

i usually dont deal much with the rendering aspect of maya, but currently i am. i am using maya version 7.0.1 still btw

i have been trying to use the maya render layers, and as far as i can tell it seems to be very buggy.

some of the issues i have been having -

1. when i change the setting of the master layer for file output type, such tif, the next time i open the file back up it is set to iff

2. when i set a frame range on the master layer, as soon as i reopen the file the frame range has changed back

3. if i am on a specific layer, and i try to put two separate materials on one object (by selecting faces and putting on the second material) it gets put onto the entire object. actually in one instance it did work correctly.

4. items that were previously assigned to layers sometimes get dropped from that layer

i have been told already that i should not be using references with the maya render layers, so i am not doing this. a variety of odd things keep happening, i have just tried to be specific and list a few. the render layers really sound great in theory, but for me they seem to be totally broken. maybe there is a setting or something that somebody knows about?

thanks for any information.

I think the bug was fixed in Maya 8. It is really handy now :)

Hi

Mayby it was fixed i 8 but it sure came back in 8.5. I`m having same problems and more as you decribed. I'm trying to solw some af the problems but it`s not working.
One thing that is working: save all the renders layers in each scene and start correcting mistakes. But it`s a very bade soultion.
I'll get back to you if I find some answers.

don't do per face material assignments, I never got that to work.

watch out what you assign where, e.g. if you assign a material override at the parent node of a group and do another override at the child level, you will have issues

7.o was a little messed up, try 8.5, at least you can hit tech support when you run into a problem

Hi luxwork

Thanks for you reply. Yes I assigned material per face! That took houres to do, and houres to fix.
Sorry if this sound stupid but when you wright "tech support" do you mean F1?

thanks for all the feedback so far . . . at least i dont feel like an idiot now hehe. it feels a lot better to know that other people are having the same problems so i know i am not doing something wrong or silly.

i will try to keep that idea in mind of assining things to a parent or child node. my problem is, i usually have all kinds of child-parent relationships in any scene, if only to keep things cleaned up.

i will need to get 8.5 and see if i have any better luck

tech support means calling Alias, assuming you are paying for support.
