how well do the dynamics on messiah compare to does on maya? Are they better?

hate to say it but at the moment there is no comparison.

What about Blender+Messiah against Maya?

better but maya is very hard to compete with as far as dynamics are concerned.

ncloth has no equal.

physics are pretty solid, but once you start exploring third party tools they become incredible. what exactly are you trying to do? if you want a flag waving in the wind, messiah can do it. But if you want anything more complex then you have to get really creative or shell out of maya. xsi has great dynamics too and is a bit more affordable. But its still using syflex for cloth, which mayas ncloth trumps hands down (depending on the task of course, but generally ncloth is faster then syflex to calculate and is amazingly stable and easier to setup).
XSI has REALLY powerfull hardbodies though, probably better then mayas (out of the box)

LW has decent hardbodies too. C4D is pretty capable as well, great hair setup workflow.
