I just made some changes on a project in maya 8 and want to get it back in to maya 7. I know that I can save weights, and I know I can save my mesh as an .obj and get that back into maya7, but what about the rig? Is there any way of saving that into a generic file that can be read by older versions of maya? I have a feeling I can't but just thought I'd ask.

Save the file as a maya ascii (.ma)

Open the file in wordpad.

In the first several lines, repalce any occurance of "Maya 8.0" with "Maya 7.0"

Save it.

Now it should open in Maya 7.

What he said, you must have the file saved as an .ma so you can read the file though. At the top, anywhere you see the 8.0, change it to 7.0.

You can always use the FBX format too, and set it to maya 7 instead of 7.5-8 in the exporter settings in Maya 8. But changing in the document works as well, if you dont use features in your rig that doesn't exist in M7. :)

Oh my gosh! I had no idea!! Haha, thanks guys, I'll do that. Was wondering what I could use a .ma for. :D
