View Full Version : How to smooth out my lightstream (subframing)
Heerko 04-19-2007, 09:08 AM I made a lightstream (andrew kramer tutorial) in my comp. The problem is that apperantly Trapcode Particular caculates the position every frame and draws a right line between the points. So the light path looks chunky. Andrew suggest in his tutorial to speed up the composition three times (making it 90 fps instead of 30). But I wondered if there is another way, something like calculating on a subframe basis or any other way that will smooth out the light trail.
Oh yeah, as you can see the particular obscuration layer doesnt fit very well either (if you look beside the left of her chest). Anyone knows how this can be fixed too?

No. You can however have a longer pre-composition and then time-stretch it. As another option you might wanna consider using the Motion Path method in Particular tied to a light. It provides a smooth option, though it slows down things drastically.

Particular calculates obscuration based on the center of the particle. It's quite possible that such large custom particles are treated incorrectly as it has no real concept about their size (they are treated relative to the original size). Before wasting time on other stuff, I'd simply use a duplicate of the girly, mask out the parts you need and then use what remains as an inverted Alpha matte on the Particular layer.

Hey Mylenium! I followed your Cinema 4D cloner tutorial a week ago  very helpfull thnx
I made a matte of the girl as suggested, its more work than the obscuration but the results are better.
I'm using a null object with particular inhereting the positions of the null object. So thats basically the same as parenting it to a light isnt it? I dont really get what you meant with that the light would have a smooting option? I guess I will lengthen my whole comp when I'm done compositing and then put that in another comp and stretch it like you suggested.
Thnx for your quick response!

No. in Particular 1.5 you have the option to tie your particles to an existing lights "Motion Path" which gives you sort of a 3DStroke on steroids. The light needs to be named "Motion Path 1" etc. (up to 9 paths are possible). You can then assign it as a reference in the Physics --> Air --> Motion Path rolldown. If you choose the HQ options, Particular will calculate additional Bčzier interpolation inbetween sub-samples to make things look smoother.

Ok I'll try that, thnx! I already dropped the Null. Cause I found out it's easier to create a spline with a light attached to it in Cinema4D and export that to AE.
