Hi,
I've experienced a repeatable crash of Painter X, which doesn't seem to occur in IX.5.
I have reset to a clean build with no customisations (brushes etc).
Create a new document (eg. 1000x1000).
Zoom to 100% or above (sometimes it's easier above 100% eg 300%).
Select the Lasso Tool.
Select an area. (This is not strictly necessary).
Tap the Wacom pen outside the selection (a few times) to effectively deselect (or select an area of zero size).
Painter X crashes out without warning or error.

Last night I lost some work due to this crash. I thought that when I previously had a crash (actually not very often with Painter X) that on starting up, almost all changes were recovered automatically. This was not the case last night, there didn't seem to be any backup temporary file, and starting Painter X and loading the file reverted back to the original.

It would be good if others could try to reproduce this problem.

Regards,

Phd.

PS. running on Windows XP SP2 with a Wacom Intuos A3.

Hmm, I just tried it with the trial version and it also closed out without warning just as you described.

Also running WinXP SP2 w/ a Wacom Graphire 2.

You're not alone. i went back to 9.5 on the mac because of the instability. I remeber when I first started using 9 that the program would crash alot. Corel fixed it (at least for me) when they released a point upgrade.

I'm hoping that when they release a patch this will be addressed. Painter X isn't the huge leap forward I was hoping for but It does have some nice new features.

Try to find the most common reason the program is crashing. I know for me in 9 it was when I would resize the digital watercolor brushes. X seems to crash when I save.

Good Luck.

Hi,

My system specs are:

Pentium 4
2.53 gHz
512 MB RAM
120 GB hard drive with about 68 GB free space
250 GB external drive with about 186 GB free space
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200
128 MB Video RAM
768 MB paging file
Painter X - Preferences > Memory & Scratch set to Memory Usage: 80% of available and Scratch Disk: external hard drive
WinXP Home SP2
I just did a couple of tests, first with Scratch Disk set to C:\, then set to my external hard drive, with the same result:

1. Launched Painter X.

2. Opened a new Canvas, 1000 x 1000 pixels, 300 ppi.

3. Made an irregular selection using the Lasso tool.

4. Clicked once outside the selection and Painter X vanished without an warning or a CARM report dialog box opening (to allow us to send a report to Corel).

I'd strongly suggest that you send a clear and concise description of the problem to the Corel Painter Development team at:

painterteam@corel.com

Feel free to refer them to this thread and my post in particular.

I'm using Painter X and I can reproduce the crash in each way which has been detailed here. I am also using Vista, so when it crashes it doesn't just close, Windows pops up a little box stating that it stopped working, and tries to figure out why, though it doesn't actually help anything. :) Let's hope they improve the stability in an upcoming patch.

I've experienced a repeatable crash of Painter X, which doesn't see to occur in IX.5.The bug involving selections, at least in my experience, has been around since Painter 6 or before. Now that you've isolated one source of crashing as a repeatable process, it may lead to a fix. Congratulations :)

My advice is to save iterations before, during and after using selections in Painter. If you have Photoshop, you can save yourself a lot of grief and frustration simply by doing any selections work there.

Just tested this in Painter 5.0.3, Painter 6.1, Painter 7.1, Painter 8.1 and Painter IX.6.

See my post above for my system specs.

Results:

Painter 5.0.3 - Clicking outside the selection did not make Painter crash.

Painter 6.1 - Clicking outside the selection did not make Painter crash.

Painter 7.1 - Clicking outside the selection did not make Painter crash.

Painter 8.1 - Clicking outside the selection did not make Painter crash.

Painter IX.5 - Clicking outside the selection did not make Painter crash.

While clicking outside a selection should not make Painter (any version) crash, until there's a fix for the problem, if your goal is to deselect the selection, use Ctrl/Command+D.

If that's not your goal, just be careful not to click outside the selection with the Lasso tool in whatever version you're using where you experience a crash when clicking outside a selection with the Lasso tool.

Obvious, but it wouldn't hurt to use these methods while waiting for a Corel fix.

Hi,

Any anyone confirm whether this is still a problem with the new Painter X.1 update, I currently have not installed the update, but it would be good to know if it has been addressed.

Hi,

I've been using Painter X.1 for a while, and only a few times has it vanished without a CARM dialog popping up. At least on of those times, it might have been this same problem but I can't remember for sure.

Just now, I did a couple of tests.

The first time it took five Lasso selections followed by clicks outside the selection before Painter X.1 vanished.

The second time it took eight or nine Lasso selections/clicks outside before Painter X.1 vanished.

So, my conclusion is, the bug is still with us but not so easy to initiate.

Thanks for reminding me to be careful. Who needs Painter X.1 vanishing, for pity's sake?

I just did a couple of tests myself and Painter (X.1) went for a beer after the second and third tries.

I wasn't aware of this problem until just now - Painter has disappeared before, but I'm not sure if it was due to this issue. Anyway, I'm glad I'm aware of it now - thanks for the heads-up!

That's awful dude,

Stuff like this is why I don't use painter. I've never had any version of photoshop just disappear in the middle of a job. This would freak me out to have to go back and paint things all over again with a deadline looming. I hope they fix it cuz I was considering purchasing ver. X, but threads like this make me second guess the purchase every time.

if it means anything, i have just had the same thing happen to me just right now.

- using P 9.5 on Panther G5
- 150 ppi file with 5 layers open, 2 of which where locked and invisible
- using the pattern emboss brush on layer 3 and brushing slowly

Painter disappeared.

at first i thought i had touched the desktop and Painter just shifted to the background. not the case, it was gone. thought i could hear a little snap in my tower but not sure. this is more than a crash, it just disappeared from the memory in a blink as if it was never there. all other open apps are still running and happy and everything seems fine.

i've never seen anything like it. now i have to backtrack and redo my stuff (forgot to command + s :( )

NOTE: okay it just happened again!!?! while starting to redo my work originally lost..
