View Full Version : Output 16bit Quicktime?

I'm working with AE set to 16bit, but when I go to render a Quicktime I can't set 16bit (Trillions of colors)...?

If I set the output type to TIFF I can, but not Quicktime. QT does support up to 32bit, whats the deal? I have the compression set to "none" - have tried other settings but still can't get trillions as a selectable output depth for QT?

Na, you got it all wrong. QT may support up to 32 bpc, but most CoDecs (the actual compression routines) don't. There's not a single HDR/ full float/ 32 bpc CoDec out there, but there are a few 16 bpc CoDecs such as Microcosm, Digital Anarchy's None 16 and PNG (PNG 16 bit is disabled in AE, though). In addition to that there are of course the dedicated hardware CoDecs that you can use with HD capture cards such as Blackmagic Design's 10 bpc variations. Unless you are using one such CoDec, AE will never give you trillions of colors.

Ah, ok - thanks.

Any particular recommendations for image sequence type for uncompressed 16 bit? TIFF?

Yes, TIFFs are good as are PSD and SGI sequences. If you're feeling adventurous, you might also try FNordWare's OpenEXR plugin for AE CS3 (along with the Beta of AE CS3 of course). It allows you to choose between various compressions, effectively reduzing file sizes while maintaining maximum float color.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding something here, but Microcosm is a full 64-bit codec. I've only used it for 16-bit (and even then only a few times) but if it can't handle 32-bit, why do they claim it to be 64-bit RGBA?

64 bit RGBA refers to the internal quantization matrix I presume (which simply is 4 x 16) as it stores its values as integers, not floats. Anyway, I dimly seem to recall that someone was working on a HDR QT CoDec and it was in its early Alpha, but for the life of me I can't find it...

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. When reading your original post I figured it must be something internal as opposed to an actual output option.
