hey guys, i am a character animator but i am taking a huge interest in compositing, the things people do in the FX Wars contest are just crazy, any idea where i could start to learn the skills for this ? also should i be using shake / after effect or combustion?

I use After Effects and Cinema 4D (which exports natively to AE).

So generally the process is:

Multi-pass renders with alpha channel - makes the background transparent.
Open in After Effects and use a combination of Set Matte, Blending Modes and Channel Blurs.

Altho there are some great plugins on the market such as Primatte or Walker Effects.

Try this starter tutorial (http://cowcast.creativecow.net/multimedia_101/episodes/CC_101_CompositeiPod_Lo.mp4) from Aharon Rabinowitz at Creative Cow or try Mike Batchelor's compositing tutorial (adaptable from C4D) at Slouchcorp (http://slouchcorp.com)
