View Full Version : Jeff Okun in Africa
PaulHellard 04-18-2007, 10:20 AM Hi there,
CGSociety caught up with Jeff Okun, who had an amazing tale to tell of his time working on 'Blood Diamond' in Africa last year. Read his story by clicking the image, and feel free to comment, or take some kind of action yourself.
Jeff Okun is also the subject of the April 'Meet the Artist' thread just started here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=165&t=486864).

Jop, my too, it was a very intelligent movie.
"As he traveled, he realized every house was surrounded with a 12 foot wall and electrified barbed wire, and a security guard carrying an AK-47, and began to understand things were not quite what the Wild Coast Sun would have you think."
Welcome to South Africa. :)
Really nice article. In the movie, I was impressed with Leo's accent. The south african accent is one of the most unique accents in the world (i think), and one of the hardest to mimic. He did a really nice job! Although he sounded a little bit like a durbanite who had lived in joburg for a few years and then went to cape town. ;) A good mix of the different types of accent.

I was impressed with Leo's accent.
My SA friends burst out laughing when they heard his accent during the trailer... anyway he's from Rhodesia!
I liked Diamond better than King of Scotland and prefered Djimon Hounsou's performance to Forest Whitaker's.

Yes, excellent movie. I was stunned when i found that this movie hasn't won any oscars. It's shame that Steven Rosenblum didn't get oscar for editing as this was the best edited movie from the nominees.

Was a very unique film that really opened a lot of peoples eyes to the lifestyles and story behind the scenes to the diamond market. Great film. Great article.

The zim accent tends to be alot more 'refined' than the South African accent. But that said, there are many different ways to speak with a South African accent, some that are so subtle that unless you are a South African, you will never pick it up. I can even tell what school a person went to from the accent they have. ;)

I miss Zimbabwe... You can take the African out of Africa, but you can't take Africa out of the African!
Mugabe, what the HELL are you doing!
My father and uncle were both in the Rhodesian war. I have seen some of the pictures that he took whilst he served along with a couple stories he told about his time there. Its pretty horrible what people do too one another for their beliefs.

well i can't say i've ever seen a security guard carring an AK guarding a house here in cape town, and we don't have 12 foot walls either, ok quite a few houses have electric fencing...
dunno maybe i just live in the wrong hood!!

I did enjoy this film. I was more moved by Djimon's performance. Towards the last part of the film I found Leo repeating certain phrases in order to adhere to the S. African accent which, to me anyway, grated a bit. I'm no expert but having dated a girl from Jo'burg and half my family having come from SA I found it a bit laboured. Still, a top notch film. It as one of the few from 2006 that i enjoyed. I think we've been on a dry spell recently, hopefully the likes of 300, The Messengers and Sunshine will be indicators that some decent films are now being released.

"Aaah home..." is about the exact same feeling I get as well.
Been 8 years since I left South Africa and when I'm looking for places to live I still gravitate towards those with far more security possibilities. Had the whole 10 foot walls, barbed wire, electric gate, bars over all windows, security gates across all doors and inside the house too and two guard dogs.
=P Here in Canada, people don't even lock their doors. Freaked me out at first...
And aye, didn't expect to see an article like this here, but very glad it's posted. Glad that people get to know whats really going on, rather than the media and gloss put over things... Makes you feel like your life/past is more real than some would try to believe it is, I guess?
