D'oh! I dont suppose any of them support AGP?

In a word, yes there will be AGP DirectX 10. A rumor:
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=37790

In general, though, the advantages of these new cards are seriously going to be hampered by AGP's bandwidth. I would suggest upgrading to a new motherboard with PCI express. AMD's dual core AM2 chipsets are dirt cheap nowadays.

hmmm, slower than cheaper cards available atm in DX9... FX 5 series anyone...?

Quote taken from The Inquirer (http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=38955):

The DX10 Ripoff (http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=38816)
Microsoft is blatantly misleading gullible consumers that DX10 (and by extension Vista) is needed to use DX10 hardware. You can use all the new, "advanced" features of DX10 hardware, including geometry shaders and all Shader 4.0 functionality, in XP (or any OS for that matter) through OpenGL.

DX10 isn't even a programming language, it is a hardware abstraction layer; the equivalent to OpenGL (GLSL) would be D3D 10 (HLSL). Microsoft has fooled gamers into thinking that DX10 is responsible for the fancy new graphics, when it is in fact the hardware that makes it possible. You have a DX10 card, you can use it on ANY platform provided you have the drivers for it.

There is no point hoping Microsoft will change their attitude, game developers should be urged to avoid DX10 and standardize on cross-platform OpenGL, or Nvidia's Cg language.

This is interesting and most likely true since opengl still has to have the same extensions and functionality that directx has, especially on an nVidia card. The driver is the important part, if the driver has the proper extensions and supports all the hardware functionaity then opengl will yeild the same results as directx 10. Ati's opengl drivers blow so don't count on them for feature parity, but nVidia is a whole different story.

Like the article says, don't be fooled by MS marketing, you can still have you cake and eat it too.

Shame that those new 8500 & 8600 cars are so weak compared to 8800 and even 7900 series. :hmm:

Yeah... what the hell is up with that?
The 8600 is rediculously underpowered.

Well, anything would be a step up from my Geforce FX 5600 :) I've been having a handering to get my game on lately.

Did they even fix the DX10/Vista problems that they were having with their other cards?? I would think that that should take a higher priority over introducing more new DX10 cards.

And maybe I have been out of the loop for too long, but has ATi shipped any DX10 cards yet??

Your not kidding. Looks like I'll be hanging on to my EVGA e-GeForce 7900 GTO for awhile longer.

oh they aren't that bad.. infact I check their rss feed everyday, great news source, you don't have to agree with everything they say you know. :)

Fix? but why would they do that? Nvidia don't make money fixing or improving driver/software, Nvidia make money selling fancy new card... you buy yes

lol nope, but i'm sure you knew that ;)

though over the last year the drivers improved a lot in OpenGL (and not only). Actualy, the last beta Catalyst gave a very big boost in OpenGL performance, making the cards faster than the nvidia counterparts in opengl too, at least in games ;)

heard that too, and hope AMD-ATI's products offer bigger boost over last gen GPUs at a reasonable price.

Yeah right, since Fudo left the Inquirer quality definitely didn't go up in the graphics section as you can see by this blatantly rant of the person who probably not even coded a single line in DX10/DX9 or OpenGL. And to take Cg the worst of all worst shading languages as an example just shows brilliantly cluelessness

I believe these cards are mostly designed for Vista machines that aren't going to push 3D hard. That is, getting the benefits of Aero/Silverlight without shelling out for a state of the art video device.

Woohoo! Another 5600 owner :D My fan is on the way out (making loud noises all the time) so upgrade time is really near for me...

I am curious what's wrong with Cg?
