View Full Version : Tudyk To Play I, Robot
roger 03-10-2003, 08:51 PM Does anybody know who is doing the CG for this??
"Alan Tudyk, last seen as Wash in Fox's canceled Firefly, will perform as the computer-animation reference for the CGI character Sonny opposite Will Smith in the upcoming SF film I, Robot, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Alex Proyas is directing the adaptation of Isaac Asimov's classic book for Fox and will begin shooting in May, the trade paper reported.
Smith plays a detective investigating a crime that may have been perpetrated by a robot (Tudyk).
Like Andy Serkis (Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers), Tudyk's actions, facial expressions and mannerisms will be CGI-enhanced to create the robot, the trade paper reported."

I do not know who is doing the vfx,
but I would like to comment on my fears for this film
I hope it does not turn out like AI.
I had such high hopes for that film.
I hope they hire a talented art director, foremost.
Also, I want the movie to be long and slow paced.
I am glad that it is being made though, because
I love the book, and it is the classic robot story.

I don't know if Proyas will make it faithful to the book, but whatever happens, I'm sure he'll make it a great film.
DFilm did the effects on Dark City, and then they were bought by Animal Logic, who did the effects on his last film, Garage Days. So I guess there's a chance that AL will be handling the effects on this too.

Was Garage Days any good? It had a very limited release and I missed it. It's probably still playing in some tiny theater around here. I just have to look for it.
Either way, if it is in Alex Proyas's hands then it's all set. Also Alan was pretty cool in both Firefly and Knights Tale. Will be cool to see him getting more parts.

I like to comment on my hopes on the film. I hope that it does turn like AI. That film exceeded and blew my expactations.
Now on topic, seems the film is more based on Caves of Steel, but they are taking the I Robot title. Will see how it turns out.

I haven't seen it yet. It's coming out June 18th in North America, though I guess it might already be playing at some festivals. It was out in October in Australia. There's supposed to be some pretty cool CGI enhanced drug trip scenes.

May I assume that this will actually be based on 'Caves of Steel' and not 'I, Robot'? If it is based on 'I, Robot' I have no interest in this what so ever.... If it's based on 'caves of Steel'.... well, I'm having a hard time with the casting of Will Smith. I do like Will Smith, but I'm not sure he's right for the character. I hope I'm wrong though. It'd be a cool trilogy if they do all three of the main robot books.

It seems like the story is neither I Robot nor Caves of Steel... but a mix of the short story Hardwired and concepts and characters from other novels:

Be honest...he's a box office draw. Whether or not you think he's right for the role, he will bring in hundreds of thousands of people who might not otherwise see the movie. Are there better choices? Sure. Is he a bad choice for the role? Maybe. Will he bring in the money? Yes.
