View Full Version : Trapcode Flux
JohnnyRandom 04-16-2007, 11:30 PM Peder Norby demo'd Flux today. Looks very promising! It is based on Particular technology and creates wonderful 3d fractal type imagery. There are a ton of great features already including various different grid shapes, depth maps, color maps, displacement. He said he hoped to have it released the end of June through sometime in July.
Couple of pictures: Sorry quality of photo's not that great but you'll get the idea.

Nice. Thanks for taking the time to posrt some pictures for us poor souls who weren't there.
Edit: I've snatched the effects shots for my blog (blog.mylenium.de), I hope you don't mind.

Peder's a freakin' genius. Can't wait for new Trapcode loveliness!
Thanks for posting.

Not at all, Post away:)
I can't wait to get a seat, looks to be great for more organicy/wavy goodness. He didn't mention exact pricing but he did mention offering a deal for previous owners of particular (that will be sweet)

Yepp. I'm certain things will materialize in foreseeable time. Maybe when Peder's back from NAB, some more info will be available.

if you dont mind i wouldn't mind posting these images somewhere too. Is that ok?
Just quite a few people interested in seeing.
Thanks.

Go right ahead, thanks for asking:)

You can already simulate the same exact effect in trapcode particular by assigning the particle type to "layered grid" It will use a fractal effect for a displacement for the particles.

Correct, as this is built upon particular but try and turn that grid into a sphere (can't remember what other shapes were in the grid drop-down menu)
EDIT: had to look at the picture again to see the options...

wow xD! I can just imagine some of the awesome effects we will be able get with things like that. awesome!! should have actually took the time to look at more than actually one screen lol. ^_^

The fourth picture, the one with the sine waves those are strings (which equate to the wavy lines), it is actually 3d you can spin the strings around to say look down the center of the of them as if you were looking down a tube, pretty crazy looking, you also have the ability to add a spherical forces (as in particular/physics) to offset the effect.
As the plugin is still in development, if you can think of anything that might be a nice feature or addition email Peder with your suggestions.

yeah but you could also do that in particular pretty much just change organic lines preset to glowing sphere but still its gonna make composition creation alot easier and make what would have taken forever to make before be pretty easy.

It certainly has bits and pieces of Particular here and there, but the whole experience is going to be quite different, mainly for the fact that there are no actual physics happening. It will be interesting how much we will be able to control the internal structures.

very cool
thanx for the images

ohhh damnnnn the possibilities, thowing on some mr smoothie with some trapcode glare, some time echo and simple expressions and you could probably get one trippy ass video that would give any lsd trip a run for it's money, haha (drugs are bad, mmmmkay?)

I wish they could speed up the rendering time of particular a bit... mmm... ok maybe I need a new computer!
Seriously this rock... but yes we was able to tweek these nice smoky atmospheric fx with particular. Now it will be just more easy for newbies and we will see these effects everywhere and nobody will care anymore! :) ok ok... we already see these everywhere!
I wish they work a bit more on 3d stroke and make them really 3d stoke, just like curves in 3d software... with points you can position and ability to really control them in 3d... not only bend 1 mask in 1 direction like now...
look here for my last logo animation using 3d stroke...

and here for a fire FX for a comedy show make with particular (beware cheap fx with ninjas! but the fire is kinda ok a the end!)
http://www.thierryfortier.com/movies/Final_Laser_01.mov
was a one day production...
anyway! trapcode was the best thing for after effects since sliced bread (which make adobe techs strongers!)

That's more or less impossible. The AE API does not provide any means of creating true custom 3D widgets at this point. It would have to be done using a series of Null objects held together by expressions, but then you'd still have to calculate interpolation either by means of another workaround (you simply assume all Nulls represent the same object but at different times and let AE do the math) or based on internal algorithms. After that you still have to find a way to deal with self-intersecting loops and other non-ideal scenarios. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's not particularly easy to implement, either, since you have to do it all by yourself. AE does not provide even a tiny shred of scanline and raytracing logic in the API, either, as you might have guessed.
At the moment I simply don't think it's realistic to expect any upgrades soon. Peder is busy making all his plugins work in 32 bpc, different host apps (Avid, FCP, Motion, Premiere) and has to do Flux as well, which should keep him occupied for quirte some time.

Hi mylenium! yes, its clear by your explanation it would be a hard and even impossible job to implement... Its not for nothing we all do some 3d app aside after effects!
I just wish they put more options in AE at the place of relying on expressions...
an example; 3 days ago I had to do a very rush animated synopsis... here it is; 4.3mb QT
http://www.thierryfortier.com/movies/Syno_01_lowrez.mov
at first I didnt wanted to put these bubbles inside the drop in circle like that... I simply wished to got them all over the place linked between them with a stroke. easy way to do that? put a skinny long solid at the first bubble, pivot at the left, then targeting it to another bubble and scale it up for reach it...
I didnt find a way to target it on another object... only expression could do it. but I can do it with a camera! why the missing option? its look pretty easy to code no? I gived up that idea in a flash, put them all in a circle, oriented for face toward the camera and deliver the animation like that... (it was my fault, I passed too much time struggle with the drop and leaves in lightwave... the director was mad at me! im not the wisest when it come to deadlines)
Im really in love with XSI recently cause everything they could think off, they implement it. there is tons of options and sub-menus and hidden gems... one of the most interesting feature is you can enter a relative value in the position (rotation and scale too) field for multiple objects;
if I select 6 objects in AE and enter a value of 360, 240, -50, they will all go to the same point. end of story.
in XSI I can enter value like this; r(-360, 360), r(-20,20), r(0,200). all the objects will be place randomly in the specified space. if I enter l(-60,60)... all the objects will be in line between thos value... what a nice feature!
there is a script to do that I know...
anyway... sorry for the long post! its not everyday I can reply to Mylenium! you are quite an authority in the after effects community!
