View Full Version : Connecting a TV for use with AE ...
everlite 04-15-2007, 09:48 PM Hi Guys,
Just curious, i was wondering if it's possible to connect a TV to a PC for use with After effects and Premiere, i'm not quite sure what use i would have for this really, just a thought. Maybe it would be good for previewing broadcast work etc in realtime.
Any ideas or thoughts on the subject ?
Cheers - Dave.

the only thing i'm aware of is being able to hook a camcorder up and preview on there. You just plug in your camcorder via firewire, and in the preferences, there's a panel to pick what to output to, and you can pick the firewire.
i suppose using this, you could then hook a tv up to your camcorder and be able to see it in live.
someone probably has a better way though, that doesn't involve running through a camcorder.

Cheers Sean, hmmm, must be an easier way. I went out to a post production studio the other day with some 3d work that needed to be put onto VHS. He took the file, threw it into AE, flicked on a cheap TV he had to the right and went through a few menus in AE and then it began playing through the TV, literally in about 30 seconds from sticking the CD in! he then did something else, went through to another room and brought back a few vhs tapes a few minutes later! all had me a little dazzled but i liked the idea of how he had AE hooked up to a TV.

I had the same idea in a job last year and was recommended to try this.

I didn't used that device though so I can't say anything about it.

The two best methods that I know are:
1. Canopus ADVC100 or newer model. I have this set up on one of my machines, and basically you can run a firewire cable to the device, which has high-quality digital/analog conversion circuitry, and spits your signal out as composite video. Really, any device that will convert firewire to composite/component video will work.
2. The best option by far is to buy Blackmagic Design's Decklink Pro card. It provides outputs for use with Standard TVs or professional broadcast monitors, as well as deck capture, HD monitoring and down-res, etc.

Several dedicated video processing cards from Blackmagic, AJA and Matrox provide dedicated plugins for AE. Perhaps he was using that. If your graphics card has a S-Video out, you can also use the plugin from http://www.cyberzeka.com .

Seems like the best option so far; the simplest and cheapest. Anyone have any further thoughts on this plugin?

Simple and cheap isn't always best, especially in this line of work. If you intend to do color correction or any broadcast work, what you really need is reliability and accuracy...
To that end you'd be better off looking into the hardware offerings of Blackmagic or Aja. $295 is not that much to pay for the benefits of accurate monitoring.
