I would hazard a guess and say experience, observation and a hell of a lot of experimentation. :)

Often times I like to Experiement with known techniques and try to find other secrets that may not be so common.
I use camtasia studio to recode the videos.
Also, as promised, there are 2 more tutorials brand new today.

Yeah, I was just playing around one day and tried to figure a "cheat" to get some of that 32bit magic. I'm glad many people found that useful; wasn't sure how many people have even fiddled with that features yet.

Yeh i agree with that, i rarely use AE prior to seeing Andy's tutorials, they inspired me to dig much deeper and now i'm using AE a lot more, even for work, which is always good :)
Any more tutorials in the pipe?
One tutorial i'd like to see, not sure how its done is the checker board effect, i've seen a few ads recently where the camera's looking down on a crowd of people and their all holding boards that shows a message, they flip the boards over to reveal a logo or something. They often seem to do this with stadium crowd shots, a recent one was done for coke i think where an image of the drinks gets poured from one side to the other side of the stadium as they all flip over these boards. i think this might be 3d though.
Cheers - Dave.

I would say that your tutorials is one og the best. It is easy to understand tutorials, even new AE user will understand. They are not like Ayato tuts, because ayato tuts is more complicated and for advanced users. :) Waiting for new tutorials from you. :bounce:

Andrew, your After Effects tuts are just the most intuitive yet fast-paced After Effects tutorials ever made. You even explain the really, really stupid things in After Effects in a way so they don't sound so bad. (like the workaround for timewarping to less than 100% without clipping at the original length)
Keep it up, please.

Hey Andy,
You mentioned earlier that you use camtasia, what kind of export settings do you use? I often try to do vids with camtasia but it comes out less than great, but you manage to get great quality, large size and a decent file size!
Looking forward to future tutorials :)

Andrew Kramer,
I hate to sound like a fanboy but, I really have to thank you for all the free tutorials you put up, as well as, the DVDs you put out. I'd say, 75% of what I know about After Effects - I learned from your tutorials. I never would have figured out all of what AE is capable of without the invaluable resources of people like yourself. Sometimes though, with the more complex tutorials, I do wish they were downloadable so I could study them easier, but, I really can't complain - I can only ask that you just keep making them.
AndrewKramer

Your very welcome. I appreciate all the support from the community; it really makes it easier to keep updating so frequently.
In addition to the tutorial up today, I have another one planned for later this week...
Take care,

hi
Andrew
thnx for timeremap tutor ,it works on many clips
but for some unknown reasons, there's a clip that plays the whole clip first b4 doing the remap ( i keyframed it like the other successful clips )
Any ideas on how to fix it?
thnx

@Andrew: Thanks for the great sky replacement tut! But is there any reason why the Colorama thingy is better for tweaking the matte than an ordinary levels?
@Buller: Try posting screenshot of your keys.
- Jonas
AndrewKramer
07-21-2007, 06:27 PM
Not sure about the Time Remap, perhaps a misplaced keyframe...
As for the Colorama, in this case, the levels adjustment would do the same thing, however I really wanted to introduce everyone to professional Matte creation Tips. For example, With Levels you can only select the Brights and if you are tricky, you can invert it to select the shadows, but with colorama you can select just the middle grays and black out the darks and whites by simply adding a white point at about 6 o'clock and blacks at 3 and 9. Then use this as a matte for the midtones for color correction...
Also the ability to pinch a matte with the colorama is more powerful than just levels alone because you are limited to only 3 points compared to unlimited with colorama. This way you can crush and stretch a specific regions accross the spectrum of grays.
You can even use the Saturation Channel in the Colorama input to make a matte selection to only one color, or use the other modes for specific selections.
But as for the very specific example, levels would be a fine choice and even a better choice if working with 32bpc...
Best,
Andrew Kramer

07-21-2007, 07:22 PM
Oh yea, that makes sense, thank you!
Why wouldn't you use the Colorama with 32 bpc? Because the filter doesn't work with 32 bpc at all, or because the 360 degree dial doesn't give the human eye accuracy enough to even bother?
Thanks,
- Jonas
AndrewKramer
07-21-2007, 07:38 PM
Well it's not that you wouldn't but you could control the SuperBrights a bit better with Leveles. And yeah, I think the colorama is only 8 or 16.

I'm having the same problem.. it seems that the site where some of the tutorials are hosted is down. http://www.videocopilot7.net/ is giving me a 509 Bandwidth Limit Exceeded error.

You might need to clear your cache if the F5 doesn't work. If you are a PC you can try CTRL+F5. I use Firefox.

Hi Andrew, i've just tried it on 2 PCs and a laptop, and still the same, bandwidth exceeded page, anyone else getting same or different?
- Dave.
AndrewKramer
07-23-2007, 02:14 AM
Well, you shouldn't see an error the page should just be blank. You are launching from the tutorial section correct? Then when the page opens up you should be able to hit F5 to refresh. Basically we have several servers that distribute the content so that all of the videos will be fast to download. I've moved some of the tutorials to a new location.
Is there a specific tutorial that doesn't work for you?
Thanks for your help,
Andrew

Oh, i'm with you. The videocopilot7.net shows the error. That is correct, but the tutorials on the actual site www.videocopilot.net (http://www.videocopilot.net) work fro you?
videocopilot7 is where we put older tutorials, but it seems that 5000Gbs wasn't enough for the whole month, so I've distributed them to other locations.
Thanks Again,

Thanks Andrew, yeh i've seen the blog, great stuff, i encourage everyone else to head over (quite literally :)
Just a quick question, can the same techniques be used for a camera move that involves a dolly forward or zoom? i know the first will involve parallax so this will probably need to be a projected matte. Any thoughts?
