...always make my machine run out of memory, but when I use export file it renders just fine? I must have tried every flippin trick in the book this past night to reduce layers, streamline effects, and tweak my memory/cache settings, but to no avail.

What gives?

go there, and scroll down until you see the "secret" AE preference. it might help with the memory failing.

it's just a workaround, though, and the fact that the AE team put it there seems to imply that they've quietly acknowledged this common error.
