Well, this is going to be my first attempt at a matte painting ever. Just got a wacom and wanted to try matte painting for a while now, and this challenge is a nice reason to finally start. And it'll be nice to see and read about what other people are doing with it.
So far I've cleaned most of the floor and the stairs, except I'm having trouble with the columns/balusters(?) of the stairs on the left. Not really sure how to fix that. Tips are welcome. :)
Right now I'm testing something with the mosaic windows in the back, trying to remove the bright light while adding detail. It looks a bit bad on this scale so I included a little detail inset. Changing light is probably more for stage 2/3, but I just had to get away from cloning people out of the photo. :D
If I actually make it to stage 3 I want to try and make a dark scene, other than that I've not really decided yet what to do for stage 3.

hey welcome ! for your first try this is coming along really great and the mosaic windows look really good, remeber the theme maybe you want to break some of them or try to cross a complete tree in them
good luck I'll be lokking forward

Thanks! And yeah, I want to break those windows alright. Just not with a tree. For stage 1 everything has to be cleaned up first I think. After that the demolishing begins...
I decided to do a quick sketch of an idea I had, to see if it could work. But since I'm trying to get used to the digital drawing thing, I didn't really got a nice drawing. So I made one on paper first, and after that I just created a digital mock-up using some photos. (so it really looks aweful, lol).
Anyway, it's basically "Meteor(s) coming for the very last bits of dinosaurs". In my paper drawing one meteor came through the back mosiac windows crashing into the dinosaur. That has a more dramatic feel so I may just go with that. The other idea I had for this was a dinosaur skeleton overgrown and 'filled' with ivy, but I'm not sure if that's going to be too difficult to do for me. :)
So this is just basic composition stuff, trying to figure out what I want to do. Comments/thoughts are welcome.
*edit: Hmm. I just realized these meteors are making it something else than a matte painting, right? :banghead: Can't use a matte with floating meteors in it, so meteors could be added in stage 4 - camera move? As real moving objects? Oh well, ivy filled dino is possible as matte.

yeah I agree for a still I would not use the meteors falling, focus first on the matte painting and elements, just as you said , on stage 4 you can work in a complete visual effects shot with meteors, walking dinosaurs if you want, but always thinking that the goal here is the matte painitng / enviroment itself

Yeah, no meteors for me then. I already did some sketches of some other ideas, but those are on paper. But I doubt I'll get to stage 4, so for now I'm just going to work on cleaning the plate.
I'm starting to get a bit more used to the pen/tablet. Did a lot more painting than cloning/healing now. Mostly on the smaller details, like the lightspots, signs and a speaker. So it's just a bunch of small changes, but I'll add a pic anyway. Since I made a quick fading WIP viewer, that fades into the next wip image every 3 secs or so. Nice to see it progressing like that. Take a look, just 3 pics so far though: http://kzoiks.org/wip/
(feel free to rip the html/js/css, I just altered a jquery addon a bit)
*edit: here's a rar with the files: wipviewer.rar (http://kzoiks.org/wip/wipviewer.rar)

nice work :)
and thanks for the wip viewer, looks cool.
I love what you've done to the windows. they look great. what did you do to them? isolate and then play with levels and curves etc?
