View Full Version : How should I begin character modelling ?
Hagelades 04-13-2007, 08:33 PM Hello everyone !
I have a problem which way I should choose to begin good character modelling. I have read a lot of tutorials about character modelling, but most of them was too hard to understand by myself at that stage of experience what I have. I need help with choosing tutorials, which I should to do, to earn all head and body modelling techniques step by step (I mean a good topology of head etc.). I need help because I don't want to get bad habits in character modelling if I choose the way by myself. I'm most interested in high-poly humans modelling, but at this time I need to earn experience in creating the base mesh in poly-modelling software. I will be really grateful for any tips and tutorials from You all. Software what I'm using is Autodesk 3ds Max 8 and Pixologic Zbrush 2.0.
Best regards,
LooneY

Thanks guys ! :) But I have few more questions. What do You think about this training DVD: http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/ijo01.html.
1) That DVD is good for beginners ?
2) Is it "step by step" ?
Best regards,
LooneY
I know this is a text tutorial, but it is quite good (but hard to understand)

btw, you should practice character modeling instead of just reading it

well i'm a very average modeller myself , but at the end , i find that the only difficulty whith modelling is not the technical side ! In maya you use maybe 6 or 7 tools always and always , repeating the same things ! Extrude / Merge / Spilt / Soft mod / Cleanup ...
The only difficulty is to know exactly what you whant to Do PRECISLY ! so if you want to model a face in 4 days !
- Dont' Touch maya for 2 days , study your topology on photshop or painter , choose exactly where you want to put the flow of your edge loop get a max of reference photos , study the details , ask yourself how to achieve the finer details, Take inspiration from topology from other guys ...
- Then When you know exactly what you want to do ... Start with maya and spend the 2 other days in the execution . All the hard part was done previously , you know where you wanna go , and all you have to do is create the topology you have design !
Modeling it's easy very easy , but good modeling is really hard cause most of us , and me the first just start and rush into the computer , without thinking about what they do !
and this is even more true for animation ...

Yeah, that seems to be very important and it's really good option to draw topology on image.
Thanks SebKaine !

Just brought the eva wild dvd few days ago, this is possibly the best dvd i have ever seen, he takes you through every aspect of the female figure, great for the beginer artist and the more advanced artist.

that dvd ranges from novice modelers to advanced modelers, since he kinda expects people to know the program very well and his pace is more of an advanced modeler's. it is step by step and if you pay attention enough or scrub back and forth to see what he did, you'll begin to understand. but he does a few things in there that are not spoken and are just general knowledge of 3ds max, just to let you know.
Thanks guys ! :) But I have few more questions. What do You think about this training DVD: http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/ijo01.html.

2) Is it "step by step" ?

Thanks Giancarlo ! I think that the best way will be Eva Training DVD's, but when I end Eva's project I will provide myself with Gnomon's DVD.
Thanks one more to everyone for helping ! :)

to be honest, the best thing to do I would say is to just jump into it.....asking questions first doesn't really help, you have to put it to practice, then you can post your results and have folks C&C on it....I don't think you have to buy anyDVD to learn, just on CGTalk alone there's a crazy amount of data...not to mention the web in gerenal....if someone models something you like.....ask them about it....what I've found in my experience is after awhile, you'll develop yourOwn style for character modeling....topology is important to some degree, but you'll end up finding one that works for you down the line anyways.....but most importantly, know your anatomy....it'll make modeling alot easier
hey dablik, nice link!

The Training dvd from 3dtotal is probably the best training dvd for 3D max for character modeling for beginners, the one from gnomer is WAY! complex and you need very good knoladge of max and modeling before you even attempt it, i know as i got both ^^.
but by far the text turorial joan of arc is the best one to use, it's free and you cant beat it for detail.
