Heres a shot of a character I'm working on for my demo reel. Its nearing completion, but I thought I might get some feedback before I start to animate. I still haven't textured the eyes and I plan on putting more emphasis on them with lighting so his head is more a focal point.

Any feedback you have is appreciated.

Thanks

D.

Oh yes, the design isn't my own, its based on concept art from an artist at Westwood I believe..

Your lighting is a little preliminary, but I think the modeling and texturing is awesome... eeeexcept the toenails. Looks like little green starfish attacked them.

Here's the guy that made the original drawing. He's one of my favorite concept artists. :)

Looking awesome

The texturing (esp near the text) looks a bit blurry.

Think I saw a 360 rotation on the PVR...that was looking awesome too.
What about a little more dirt for the textures...probably is the lighting but it look to clean and flat, specially in some parts of the armor...

when looking at it, it did take me some time to figure out how the head looks like. maybe not covering his eyes with the strap and make it visible would help so the head is more distinct from the rest of the body.
other than that, looks cool and nice feel of weight!

Yes, I did everything but design it. Hawkins did that for me ;) I would have submitted him had I known about the beast of burden contest :wip:

Thanks for the feedback, I'll be posting some final renders out in the next week or so

I have been getting requests for information on how I do my textures, so instead of replying to each person I thought I'd just post my answer.

"well I mostly paint the detail of my textures myself using a Wacom pen. I wouldn't be able to do it without one.

Often though with materials like leather or metal I start with a very light picture or two of a photographed surface as an overlay in photoshop. I then add my own color and detail to it. once I get a good look that I like I go in and paint in soft shadows using a very light pressured black brush in photoshop. I start with the big shadows, then do the big highlights, and eventually work down to painting shadows and highlights sometimes with a brush that is only 3 pixels big.

Painting a detailed map is a time consuming process though. It took me about a day to paint the face map, and the same to paint the guys legs.

As much as I like to say I painted all textures myself, I find using a photograph base gives me a much more interesting look especially when painting organic surfaces like the fine wrinkles in skin. or the rough surface of bone.

You don't have to be a painter to do any of this, I have no fine arts history, and have rarely painted anything in my life - just follow the mesh in ways that would make sense.

I hope this answers some of your questions -

Oh yes, and I'm working on getting some animation done for him now.

I think I've seen that guys work in a mag somewhere cant remember the name. Maybe it was heavy metal or a gaming mag but I could be wrong his style is so damn familiar. May I add it is very wicked.

Oh yeah luved the beast of burden:)
