View Full Version : Animation: run, stop, bump
baglunch 03-10-2003, 04:57 AM This is the first scene of my VFS student demo reel. The scene is very short (2 seconds) and a quick download. Please ignore lighting, texturing, and weighting issues and give me some animation feedback.
Click the image below to go to my demo reel site for the movie. I'll be posting updates there as they come and referencing them in this thread.

EDIT: Website link changed, noted in new post.
...or click here if the image isn't showing up... sigh... (http://www.vfs.com/~adamc/)
Thanks!
p.s.
I'm new to posting here, so please let me know if this is a good way of announcing updates and seeking feedback.

Looks good, only thing I notice right off the bat is the head seems to pop back against the wall at the very end. keep up the good work.

Thanks for the response, Dan. I'll check my f-curves on the head there.

I really like your characters, they look great. the one thing that i noticed whith your animation is the right arm seems to be just flopping around. I don't know if you intended that or not, but it really stands out for me. Anyways keep up the good work.

Where is the arm flopping? The run in, the stop, or the run backwards? Thanks.

I see the arm swinging really low when he comes to a stop, maybe the timing for the arm swing is a little off or from the camera angle it is a little weird. I aslo thing it's too dark, add some more lights.
I like it tho.

Doesn't he need to swing the arm really low to shift the weight over so he can make the change of direction quickly?

I set up a webpage to show the progress of this reel.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I'll make recommended changes as I come back for second passes on these clips.
lookin so much better, great job chaput. You really got a lot of character into that guy in that scene. His movement gives him a good sense of weight and bulk too. No further crits, Keep it up:beer:

Hey baglunch!
I really like your plot. And you've made so much progress! It's great to see something come so far!
I know this is a work in progress, how much of your monster animation on the last update is finished? If you add a little lunge back before the monster leaps forward, it would add more weight.
But you prolly know that. You seem to have some nice animation skills - nice shoulder animation on that one shot of the monster lifting his hands.
I'm really looking forward to seeing this done! :applause:

I'm really looking forward to seeing this done!
Oh, man. Me too.
heh.
Thanks for the feedback. All the clips I've posted so far are "first pass" animations. I hope to have time to go back and completely redo them from scratch. I'd like to spend more time on my antics and secondaries but I have a presentation tomorrow and gotta crank out as much as I can stand tonight thru till tomorrow.
I hope to have time before I graduate to re-assess all my shots and incorporate the feedback I've been given.

We better turn our heads and criticize each other!!!

In your latest clip, the final sigh lacks the great shoulder movement you've been using. When he getting frusturated his whole body should sag, not just his arms. Try not to terminate your fcurves so completely near the ends of your actions too. I think a subtle moving hold in some cases might be nice - even if you plan on having a camera cut I would think it might be worth your time to overanimate rather than underanimate.
Know what I mean?
Other than that, your clips are looking :airguitar :buttrock: :bounce: :airguitar :buttrock: :applause:
Making good progress Adam, can't wait to see it all come together..

Are any os this shots final animation?
I like the camara movement of the other shots but you are not using any in this last one. Watch the safe action field area of the composition, give more space to the action.
The feet are looking stiff and they are kind of taking off and landing at the same time, are they?
Nice antic!!!
baglunch

Yeah, the camera move is non-existent. I'm actually intending to cut this into 2 clips from dramatic angles.
The feet are landing at the same time for a sense of stomping. I'm rendering another version of this right now that will replace this one. The new version has little kids getting stomped. It looks better with little kids getting stomped.
All shots may end up being final animation. Dunno how much time I'll have to fix stuff, but there are a few glaring problems that I really hope to get to.

That last clip is now updated to have the monster jumping on little kids instead of just jumping around the room. Also, some fast cut clips have been pasted on at the end. They are too quick to bother making them their own clips.
Cheers.

HAHA! that looks great, the weight of the beasty is looking pretty good so far. the camera shake might be too much, test it out in premire next to the other shots...to see if it "flows".
im liking the design, very cool characters :)

Hey Berserker,
I'm planning on adding MORE camera shake on the other shots in post-production, because they are generally from further away and I'm not so concerned about parallax issues. Hopefully it'll work, but you never know. This scene (from April 2) will come right after the rapid cut scene just before it (March 31), so they are both big camera move, fast action shots.
I took the liberty of checking out your webpage. Well, pictures, anyway. It looks really sharp. Good job.

I saw some weighting "problems" in the stomach area. There is missing some follow through from the antic of the arms.
I like the camara shake :buttrock:

Baglunch! That's great! Love the cuts & pacing! Great choice of angles & shots. It's really builds the momentum! I'm really looking forward to seeing this completed! :applause:
How much more is there?

thanks baglunch (of course i plan on making a full website, once im done a few more models ;) )
cammera shake is cool, but i lthink it can be a bit gimicky and distracting to the rest of the movement. similar to a lensflare, it can add that final polish to a clip, but its really a finishing touch, not something to be used heavily all the time (especially at this stage of the project).
....
of course, this IS an action clip

Zoetrope: Thanks! There's only a few more scenes I need to animate the monster in, and then I pretty much just have the kids running on paths with run cycles, so there's not much animation to do on them.
But, I'm hoping to go back to several scenes and touch them up based on the feedback I've gotten online and in person.
And there's lighting and weighting and texturing to fix.
I've got 3 more weeks to get everything done that I'm going to get done.
Berserker: I'll try to watch the camera shakes. Good thought.
